Taking 8 year old DS to see Gravity a 12a film?

pancakedays · 28/12/2013 13:43

My 8 year old DS really wants to see the Gravity. I wouldn't usually consider taking him to see a higher rating film but he has been talking about it for the past month.
His 15 year old cousin assures me the content is fine, but I would like an opinion from an adult. Has anyone seen it?
If the feedback is that it's not suitable, I'll tell him we are seeing frozen, the film I want to see! ??

Not watched it myself, but this might help...

Ps how do you get the smileys at the end of the text?

The film with Sandra Bullock? Would say it was OK, no sex or violence. Might be swearing? Adult content in that she talks about her daughter dying but that would probably go over 8 yo head?

Quite graphic shots of dead people in first few mins, one with face bashed in.

Scenes of dead astronauts may be upsetting. Scenes of intense fire also. Depends on how sensitive your ds is. An elderly couple in front of us got up and left after about 30 mins but I don't know their reason.

Shallishanti · 28/12/2013 13:51

I have watched it, it is a very intense watch....full of twists and turns, and danger...mostly concerning a female astronaut who is stranded in space and has to overcome many hazards to get back to earth. There isn't any violence in the usual sense (although it's clear her companions die) no gore...it really depends on your ds, I would hesitate to take an 8yo myself, I could imagine it causing nightmares in a sensitive child.
The special effects are impressive.

Shallishanti · 28/12/2013 13:56

I've just read the imdb review linked to above, I think it's a very fair summary- the main thing that would concern me with an 8yo is the intensity, it really doesnt let up, we were exhausted afterwards!

OwlinaTree · 28/12/2013 13:57

Yes it is quite intense, but that might not be so to an 8yo.

I always check this site if I am unsure - it has reviews from parents and kids.

Going by those reviews, I wouldn't take my 9 and 11yr olds.

pancakedays · 28/12/2013 13:57

Thank you for the replies. I will tell him it is a film to watch for when he is 12!
My gut feeling was no, but after the conversation with his older cousin, thought it may have been ok.
I will take him to see something else, lots of popcorn and I'm sure he will be happy!

It's fine to take an 8 year old to see that
It's a bit boring though!!

whats4teamum · 28/12/2013 14:07

I saw this last night and would agree that is a boring film.

Seemed to be a case of look we can do zero gravity effect lets not bother with much of a plot. I think 8 year old would bored.

I took my space/astronomy obsessed 11-year-old; he loved it, but it really isn't suitable even for a mature 8-year-old, though I completely understand why they would be hooked in by the trailers. If in doubt, the BBFC are the people to check, they have advice specifically for parents at
www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/what-bbfc-insight
Which explains why a film has a particular cert.
