OK, so leaving aside the fact the many things that had me yelling at the TV (such as surely you would puncture and drain an abscess before knocking your own tooth out?!) and dont get me started on the crap final bit where he is invited to follow the cute farm girl!

I am left thinking that Tom Hanks will ultimately end up back with his partner.

Yes she is married with a DD but she says that she loves him, that he is the love of her life and that she always knew he was alive but was pushed to "move on". Surely her marriage wont survive that? TH told her she must go back and she agreed but they are still in love when that happens. So I dont see that her marriage will last, and they will eventually get back together. It is the ultimate emotional affair. They were separated but never stopped loving or wanting each other and she moved on out of necessity rather than choice. So when he returned, surely it would be inevitable that they would rekindle their relationship?

I think his partner seemed a bit of a batch actually. she finds out her partner is missing at sea, presumed but not confirmed dead. He comes back after about 4 years is it? in 4 years she got married, got pregnant and has this child who must be at least 2. she moved on pretty darn quickly! and on top of that she then proceeds to cheat on her husband with her ex!

bitch not batch!

On a more trivial note, surely when he shaved off his beard, the bottom half of his face would be much paler than the top? Stupid thing I know, but it really jarred and spoiled the ending for me. Tom hanks is a terrific actor though!

Was on bbc2 I think.

Also, I've googled ( sad) and apparently there is an unused script which says he is invited into the house and asks what's in the box. She opens to find two jars of salsa verde ( why?!) and divorce papers.

Apparently in the shot of pretty girls place at the beginning there are two names over the front gate and at the end, there's only hers, implying she is now single.

walkdowntheavenue · 28/12/2013 08:15

At the beginning over the gate it says Dick and Bettina at the end the Dick is gone, in more ways then one :-)

There was a Super Bowl ad where he delivers the package and asks what's in it, she says a satalite phone, gps and some matches... Very funny around the time movie was released.
Also FedEx didn't pay for product placement and initially tried to stop use of their company name until they saw full script.

I wanted him to get with Bettina at the end, it seemed in keeping with the change in his personality from uptight clock watcher to chilled out loner.

How do you puncture a tooth abscess?

BumPotato · 28/12/2013 15:28

Suck it really hard

HettiePetal · 28/12/2013 15:35

(such as surely you would puncture and drain an abscess before knocking your own tooth out?!)

There isn't always a way to puncture an abscess. Fine if it comes up as a gum boil - but they don't always. A dentist can drill through the tooth to drain it - but what do you do without a dentist handy?

Knocking out the tooth might actually be all you can do.

Bogeyface · 28/12/2013 15:36

Fair point Hettie but in the film it was a gum boil, so I was being narky!

I love this film.

But that has always bugged me, how fast she moved on. Getting married & having a child after grieving is a lot to do in 4 years!

HettiePetal · 28/12/2013 15:48

Oh was it? Agreed then - burst the bugger.

(Ages since I've seen the film).

Bogeyface · 28/12/2013 17:34

I cant get over how fast she moved on either.

I would imagine it would take me a good couple of years at the very least to accept that he was not coming back, after 4 years I would probably have done some dating but thats all!

Perhaps she tried to replace him with someone else rather than deal with her grief, it does happen.
