Boxing Day? Aibu?

AIBU to provide a full roast dinner on Boxing Day? It's beef today. Our family have always done this but my (slim) sister in law says we're weird, mostly tongue in cheek, and that most people have light food. Just wondering

I'm with your SIL but each to their own.
I'm not cooking anything today, am just about to make turkey sandwiches with stuffing, bread sauce and cranberry sauce so hardly abstemious.

Lweji · 26/12/2013 11:40

Ah, so not really AIBU, but more What Do You Do?

Leftovers all the way. But, then, it's only me and DS and we have a packed full fridge, mostly with leftovers.

ViviPru · 26/12/2013 11:43

my sister in law says... most people have light food.

She IBU for making such a wild generalisation. Has she undertaken exhaustive research? Does she work in supply chain for a major supermarket? I'd be annoyed at someone making such an unsubstantiated presumption and suggesting the way I preferred to do things was wrong because if it. No matter how tongue in cheek.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 26/12/2013 11:43

My parents (mum to be exact!) always did Xmas dinner again on Boxing day but with cold turkey and that is what we are doing this year too.

It works well with adult kids with partners as it means we can still have "family Christmas" even if we end up not being together until Boxing day.

Also we don't stuff ourselves on Xmas day as there is plenty of opportunity to do it again today so just have a decent but not overwhelming lunch.

issey6cats · 26/12/2013 11:46

yanbu we had a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings starter and pudding yesterday and are having home made parsnip soup, a full roast pork dinner and fruit crumble pudding today, i live on my own so having family round is a good excuse to cook the works love it

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 26/12/2013 11:48

We're going out for Indian food because we didn't consume enough calories yesterday.

I say go for the beef it sounds amazing!

nostress · 26/12/2013 11:49

Full roast here on boxing day too... Every year!

Ladyglamalot · 26/12/2013 11:52

We usually have the leftovers reheated and I make more roast potatoes/veg as needed but I can't be arsed today so we are going to have christmas sandwiches with all the left overs and then scoff the cheese and crackers.

Absolutelylost · 26/12/2013 11:58

Well, I think you're right, it stung a tiny bit! Suggesting We're all a bit piggy. Which we are....

We go to mil's house and she does a HUGE buffet including cold cuts from the choice of 3 meats that she did for yesterday (we don't go for Christmas day), chips, quiche, sausage rolls, salad (not much salad but there as a nod to healthy eating), samosas, spring rolls, etc and at least 3 types of cake which we are encouraged to have a slice of each. She has more food left over from Boxing day buffet than I would have prepared in the first place for all of us.

MuttonCadet · 26/12/2013 12:00

We're all at my mums for a huge lunch, they were all here yesterday (sat down at 3, left the table at 8.30 - now that's piggy Wink)

cardibach · 26/12/2013 12:01

We have a massive meal of left overs - pate, cold turkey and ham with chips, more Christmas pud and some new trifle. It's lovely.

boodles · 26/12/2013 12:03

What has her being slim got to do with anything?

AryaofhouseSnark · 26/12/2013 12:12

Nout wrong with being a bit piggy.

NoComet · 26/12/2013 12:16

We have a sodding great chicken, that will have to be roasted today and our Boxing Day guest is ill and not coming (totally not their choice).

Doing Christmas roast again (did beef yesterday, with my parents and DSIS) feels a right faff.

Sallystyle · 26/12/2013 12:33

I always do jacket potatoes with left over turkey, stuffing and whatever else needs to be eaten.

For me, boxing day is about relaxing.

Absolutelylost · 26/12/2013 12:44

Because there's an undercurrent that we're all quite sturdy because we all eat too much and perhaps if we had salad on Boxing Day we might be a perfect size 10 too!

When I ate Turkey, we would have cold leftovers, because we would plan a day out, my DH worked away from home, so it was a rare day together.

When I was a child, Boxing Day was a day for visiting, so it was left overs.

I am eating rubbish today. I was assured that I would be catered for and offence was taken when I said I would bring my own (vegan) dinner. I ended up with boiled potatoes, carrots and peas, which I had to put vinegar on so it wasn't dry, oh yes and I had water to drink.

OP eat what suits you, it's supposed to be a time of celebration.

Thants · 26/12/2013 13:12

I would love a roast on Boxing Day! But I'm not cooking one ;)
We are about to eat nice bread and lots of nice cheeses, quiche and salad and then hot chocolate and bake well tarts Grin

tassisssss · 26/12/2013 13:17

Leftovers here.

My favourite bit is the turkey sandwich with homemade cranberry that I am about to get stuck into. I even buy fluffy white bread for the occasion!

HoneyDragon · 26/12/2013 13:25

My mil and fil always do roast pork on Boxing Day, with my SiL and Dn.

As the SiL and thanks to this thread I now have an overwhelming urge to go storming in with a bag of rocket and a couple of cherry tomatoes and yell

"CEASE AND DESIST WRONG DOERS!!"

Grin
WoodBurnerBabe · 26/12/2013 13:37

Does no one else do turkey curry? Just finished ours it was yummy :-) brown rice and lots of spinach to balance up the healthy scales a little bit. Apparently my 1yo is a naan bread fiend, and is also rather partial to mango chutney...

trinity0097 · 26/12/2013 14:08

We always do a ham (boiled nigella festive style) with mash, plus left overs, so we also had left over parsnip and celeriac bake, red cabbage, bread sauce, cranberry sauce and the left over puds. Have just had it and packed off the in-laws back home,

desperateforaholiday · 26/12/2013 14:13

Yanbu, although I don't cook again on boxing day but if someone cooked it and cleaned up after I would eat it Xmas Grin

MamaBear17 · 26/12/2013 14:16

DD has eaten properly today. I, however, am sticking to snacking on cheese and biscuits, crisps and after eight chocolates. A roast dinner sounds lovely, but after the madness of yesterday I am just feeling too lazy to make it!
