to think this is a weird present

Our baby is due in January and MIL asked if we had any names. We said we were considering one and told her what it was, but that it wasn't going to be set in stone until the baby is here.
She has bought us a baby blanket for Christmas with the name embroidered on it.
I know I am being really ungrateful but couldn't help that think it was a bit weird as the baby hasn't been born yet and we're not definitely decided on a name.
I appreciate the gesture but AIBU to think its a bit weird?

Yanbu. That is v odd indeed.

Slh122 · 25/12/2013 18:33

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. Don't really want to mention it to DP!

That's very odd! Confused

Sirzy · 25/12/2013 18:35

That is a bit odd.

Even if someone was certain of the name I wouldn't get anything personalised until the baby was born and they had confirmed that as the name as people do change their minds.

BikeRunSki · 25/12/2013 18:35

Weird
Maybe MiL really wants you to use the name.

Rollermum · 25/12/2013 18:35

V odd - makes it awkward if you change your minds!

IneedAsockamnesty · 25/12/2013 18:37

Its odd but have you by any chance been referring to the baby by that name in conversations?

Slh122 · 25/12/2013 18:37

The thing is, we mentioned it after we found out the sex at our 20 week scan, so 15 weeks ago now! We haven't spoken about it to them since.

It's very odd!

Xmas Confused

Babies can't read though so I guess you can still use it!

Xmas Grin

Don't let that sway you. Choose the name YOU want.

Slh122 · 25/12/2013 18:38

Sock, we just refer to the baby as 'the baby'

Flibbedyjibbet · 25/12/2013 18:39

She asked about the name as she had already thought of her "fab personalised" present. I reckon she was just so intent on getting the name she didn't hear the not set in stone part.

IneedAsockamnesty · 25/12/2013 18:39

That's very strange then.

But interestingly one of the gifts my youngest got was a toy named the name she was going to be called but was not when she was born. So it must not be that unusual

ItsBiggerOnTheInside · 25/12/2013 18:41

So, do you know if it is a boy or a girl? If you didn't, that would make it stranger!

ebwy · 25/12/2013 18:41

I'm contrary-natured... I'd definitely not use that name now :D

Slh122 · 25/12/2013 18:42

Yes we're having a boy Grin
Would have been very strange if she had just randomly decided the sex herself!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 25/12/2013 18:47

Clearly she is just a really excited grandparent to be.

Having read another thread on here about in-laws issues being all blown out of proportion don't let this be a big issue.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 25/12/2013 18:48

And don't be so childish as to cut your nose off to spite your face by not using the name if you like it just to make a point.

Slh122 · 25/12/2013 18:51

I would never not name the baby that just because of this. I just thought it was a strange thing to do. I know they're very excited and it's lovely, especially after reading many threads on MN where the grandparents aren't really bothered about the grandchildren. We do love the name but at the same time like others as well.

OP posts:
lljkk · 25/12/2013 19:12

Sounds like over-excitement to me.
Think I would make it clear that the name was only a maybe but you're happy to still use blanket regardless.
