a puppy?

She has got my niece a chihuahua puppy for Christmas whole other bloody thread IMO

My mum has just informed me that she will be bringing it with them on boxing day.

AIBU in being a bit annoyed she hasn't even asked if this is ok?

We have cat that is currently housebound due to injury. He is already in enough of strop with me and I fear this will lead to an entire year of him peeing on my slippers or something...

drivingmisslazy · 24/12/2013 14:39

I would of thought she could of at least asked.

stargirl1701 · 24/12/2013 14:40

YANBU. It is seriously irresponsible to buy a puppy for a child at Christmas without the permission of the parents.

I would phone her and tell her how unacceptable this is.

YouTheCat · 24/12/2013 14:40

How long is she coming for? I'd suggest making it just an hour and saying no to the dog coming. It will be hyper at all the attention for a start and your cat will never forgive you... ever.

phantomnamechanger · 24/12/2013 14:42

errr, no, YANBU, rude to you as host to make this assumption, wrong to get your mum to do the go-between bit, not fair on cat, not really fair on the puppy either TBH, with lots of settling in to do poor thing.

WooWooOwl · 24/12/2013 14:42

She should have asked, but if you had said no then she wouldn't have been able to come. You can't leave a new puppy alone for long enough to go and enjoy a family Boxing Day dinner without being an incredibly irresponsible and selfish dog owner.

Did you know she was getting a puppy?

coffeeinbed · 24/12/2013 14:42

I knew it!
As soon as I read the Op I knew it would be a puppy!

Sorry, trying to calm down, I do love puppies.
She can;t really leave it on it's own, but she should have asked.

CharlieAlphaKiloEcho · 24/12/2013 14:43

I think it's a bit unfair on the puppy too. The place will be packed.

They are here for lunch and usually stay until the evening.

OP posts:
phantomnamechanger · 24/12/2013 14:44

stargirl - no, the puppy is for the sisters DD, not the OPs DD, so its the parents who've bought it for their own kid, but because they have just got it they say they have to bring it with them to someone elses house. rude.

D0oinMeCleanin · 24/12/2013 14:45

I adore dogs, not so much puppies, but I cope with them as long as I can give them back at the end of the day Grin

No-one bothers asking if it is okay for them to turn up here with their dog/puppy because they know it will be.

However, even I would not let a young, untrained pup in my house if my cat was injured and supposed to be resting.

YANBU.

If you are wanting to keep the peace could the cat be given sanctuary upstairs? Or the pup limited to one room only?

CharlieAlphaKiloEcho · 24/12/2013 14:45

My mum just mentioned it in passing - she hasn't even asked her to tell me so as far as she's concerned I will know nothing about it until she gets here.

coffee Part of me is all squeeee

stargirl1701 · 24/12/2013 14:46

Ah! Not quite so bad but still fecking rude!

D0oinMeCleanin · 24/12/2013 14:46

Also the puppy will need to bring it's crate to chill out in, or you'll end up with a hyper, over tired puppy (think super destructive land shark and you're somewhere near)

phantomnamechanger · 24/12/2013 14:46

wait till you find out it's actually NOT a Chihuahua but a great dane!

LemonDough · 24/12/2013 14:50

Surely you don't need a crate for a chihuahua puppy, wouldn't a matchbox do? Xmas Wink

SMorgauseBordOfChristmasTat · 24/12/2013 14:50

I hope no one would ever dare bring a dog to my house. We're allergic so it wouldn't get over the doorstep.

meditrina · 24/12/2013 14:58

What a PITA.

But as you have a sick cat on the premises, the puppy comes second IYSWIM in the animal requirement stakes. Do you have a place where he can be safely shut up? (Anyone had new white goods recently and keep the box?) Or just confine it to one room with DSis and her family taking turns to keep it company?

phantomnamechanger · 24/12/2013 15:01

the dog certainly needs to be well confined/controlled at all times - my nannas yorkie pup once got stood on in the melee, no spite intended, it just moved too quickly and we kids were only used to big dogs!

sashh · 24/12/2013 15:13

Send her a text saying you are really excited because you have a new Korean recipe and you have heard she is bringing the meat.

And the puppy should be in its crate or outside being exercised by one of its owners all the time it is with you.

HermioneWeasley · 24/12/2013 17:10

Sashh, that is brilliant.

lljkk · 24/12/2013 17:14

mmm... YABU. You're a Grinch, OP. Chihuahua puppy is hardly more than a rugrat. Why can't cat stay in one bedroom for a few hours with litter tray?

Andrewofgg · 24/12/2013 17:22

sashh You are nearly as evil as I am, and that is putting it high.

There are two rules about taking a dog into anyone's home:

  1. You need permission in advance.
  2. Where Rule 1 does not apply, Rule 1 does apply.
PenguinBear · 24/12/2013 17:25

Decide on a room or rooms that the puppy can be in a ideally those with washable floors as you can pretty much guarantee he won't be fully house trained yet if at all!

I would also think about putting your cat in a room for the day with water, food and a litter tray so he is not scared off by the puppy!

TheSmallClanger · 24/12/2013 17:30

Dogs should only visit if invited, same as other "plus ones".

Does she have a crate for the pup? If this were me, I might be able to accommodate a crated pup that had to stay in one room. Our dogs aren't to be trusted around other strange dogs. I would never take them anywhere with a cat, even if invited.

saintmerryweather · 24/12/2013 17:31

Feeling quite sorry for the puppy its going to be overwhelming for the poor thing to be in such a busy environment

But on the plus side you get a squishy puppy to cuddle!
