So there's a bag of sprouts in the freezer, that I thought I had bought nice and early along with stuffing and cranberry sauce etc, as I usually do to spread the cost a bit. Well - it appears its the leftoveres from last year and was BBE May. Hmm. they'll be fine, yes? [hopeful]

no chance of getting out, no car as Dh has it in case trains and buses are up the creek. 6 miles to nearest supermarket. oh blow, I thought everyone would say they'll be fine - they are frozen after all. surely no one was ever poisoned by an out of date frozen sprout???

Well, they probably won't poison you.

But sprouts really don't freeze well - taste and texture could both be off.

Good luck.

ShatnersBassoon · 24/12/2013 13:26

Could your DH pick some up from a convenience store on his way home?

phantomnamechanger · 24/12/2013 13:30

I've decided to cook a few and see what they are like, if they are dire I will offer DH the option - no sprouts or a trip to a shop on way home.

Frozen sprouts are one of the best frozen veg, they keep their flavour & shape really well. Dont over cook them, and you will be fine :)

annie987 · 24/12/2013 13:34

They'll be fine

lifesgreatquestions · 24/12/2013 13:35

I'll be curious to great how they turn out! I imagine they would be mushy as sensitive to over cooking. If they aren't then I might try this!

lifesgreatquestions · 24/12/2013 13:36

Op, were they frozen raw our Agger being steamed?

Caitlin17 · 24/12/2013 13:57

They'll be fine.

MiniSoksMakeHardWork · 24/12/2013 13:58

Frozen sprouts are rank, ime. But if that's what you've got they'll be fine to eat. It's a best before date, not a use by date. So they won't be at their best but should be edible enough.

WhenSarahAndStuckUpTheChimney · 24/12/2013 14:04

I thought you were going to say they were still repeating on you, and in a way they are Xmas Grin

When did we go from unreasonable to unseasonable by the way? I like it Xmas Smile

Aniseeda · 24/12/2013 14:09

I think they will be fine. It's a best before date, not use by. What can have happened to them in the freezer? Good idea to test a few and check they are not mushy but they won't be poisoned. I'd eat them!

phantomnamechanger · 24/12/2013 14:35

well, I tried and they seemed fine - not as nice on their own as they will be tomorrow with lots of stuffing, gravy and all the trimmings though, I can't wait [slurpynoise]

and yes, BTW, they were bought frozen not cooked last year and frozen.

You're not a sprout fan, are you? I am, and I'd be disappointed with last year's frozen ones - if it was me I'd ask the DH to pick up some fresh ones on the way home - they have so much more/different flavour! Having said that, I also hate waste, so if it won't make much difference to you or your love ones, then I suppose the vintage frozen ones would be OK :)

All sprouts are gross. At least old sprouts might have lost some of that sprouty flavour and be easier to conceal in gravy and mustard.

phantomnamechanger · 24/12/2013 15:11

can't be bothered with the faff of peeling and cooking loads of sprouts as well as everything else, so prefer to get frozen in. we will also be having frozen peas but fresh cauli, carrots and parsnips too. Had no idea people froze their own sprouts from fresh though. I steam them not boil them to death so think they will be fine tomorrow.
