My close family are staying in a nearby holiday cottage over Christmas

the holiday home is newly modernised with actual insulation and triple glazing Xmas Envy

We live in a 200 year old draughty cottage

We've been to tea with them tonight & they had the heating set at 28 radiators too hot to touch under floor heating on and gas fire on full (open plan downstairs)

My heating is set at 18 at home

We literally melted & we had to leave very rapidly after eating as we felt so uncomfortable
so I asked could they maybe turn it down when we go there Christmas day (I'm cooking) just for a few hours

So AIBU?
They (6 of them) said it was 'cool' in the cottage & 2 were sat with blankets wrapped around them

What is the alternative? I bought a gorgeous dress today am I going to end up spending Christmas day in just my tights bra and ear rings ? Xmas Hmm

Is that just too hot???

When I visit my parents their heating is about 25 at this time of year, almost 30 last weekend but dad does not wear a jumper. Doors and windows closed so I turn down the thermostat when they are not looking! And it smells! Bad daughter emocion.

mrsminiverscharlady · 24/12/2013 19:57

Can you get to the boiler and turn the thermostat on that down? Then feign ignorance if they wonder why the radiators aren't hot.

Failing that just go in shorts.

BlackDaisies · 24/12/2013 20:03

I love it hot too but I would feel sick if it was 28 degrees indoors. 18 feels a bit cold to me though. I set mine at 20. 21 feels a bit too hot. If they won't turn it down you'll just have to dress as if it's summer.

I feel your pain OP my Nan is at my mams I'm visiting and its boiling hot and the TV is so loud I feel really claustrophobic and too sleepy for this hour

I've just spent a whole week with my parents who have the heating on at at LEAST 28 degrees,I was melting the entire week while they kept muttering about draughts! I turned off the heating in my bedroom and slept with the window cracked open and was still too hot. I felt sick all week, I'm so happy to be home where the thermostat is at 18Grin

I'd definitely open the windows while cooking or you'll faint! How can anyone enjoy their roast dinner in that heat ffs?Confused

octopusinasantasack · 24/12/2013 20:37

Far too hot. We keep the house at 18, 18 or 21 are considered the ideal temperature I think, one or the other was marked as ok on the age concern thermometer we got given. No, I am not that old!

valiumredhead · 25/12/2013 21:57

How did it go OP?Grin

formerbabe · 25/12/2013 22:28

28!! I would throw up in that heat. My house feels unbearable at 22 and I need to step outside.

Iammelting · 25/12/2013 23:35

Well I ended up cooking at home & ferrying all the food over to them.

a few of us who felt it was too hot kept accidentally on purpose leaving the door open Xmas Wink & all the kids went outside to play as it was a lovely sunny still day here.

I wore my dress & not much else & we coped taking regular breathers outside but just left & heating still on at 28

its lovely and cool at home Xmas Smile

That's a crazy temperature! Couldn't you just give them an extra blanket and turn the thermostat down without them noticing?

DaffodilDoris · 25/12/2013 23:43

Oh - too late!
