to send my puppy out on her own in the garden due to the weather

My 13 week old Labrador puppy is very cute. I normally go out into the garden with her as she is so young. However, it is howling and the weather is dreadful. I stand in the door way shining a torch into the garden and say "wee wee".

Is this unreasonably cruel?

Welcome to the world of dog owning.
It means getting out and about with your dog every day and night, even on horrible ones like it is today.
Get yourself a water proof jacket and pair of wellies and take your dog out for a walk.

yy to the eternal student. Sorry but it's only gonna get worse til spring.

PMDD · 23/12/2013 21:11

She went for an hour walk this morning and loved it. I was soaked. She doesn't need another walk because over exercise could damage her hips, apparently.

it's not cruel, just mildly neglectful though imo

trashcanjunkie · 23/12/2013 21:12

Play in the garden with her if she is walked enough. Twice a day is minimum!

permaquandry · 23/12/2013 21:13

Mine weed on the carpet and pooed on my bed today (she is not allowed in the bedrooms). I wish I'd stood outside with her instead!

coffeeinbed · 23/12/2013 21:13

Of course she needs a walk.
Just a gentle one.
She needs a walk at least twice a day.
I would just let her out in the garden for the last night pee though.

Bowlersarm · 23/12/2013 21:14

You need to go out with her. Sorry, you are really unseasonable. Or mop up puddles in your house (happily).

Bowlersarm · 23/12/2013 21:16

Woah-she shouldn't be walking for an hour at 13 weeks though. That is way you long. 5 minutes pre month is the guide. So 15/20 minutes MAX.

WeAllHaveWings · 23/12/2013 21:30

Agreed with others, a one hour walk is too long at this age, should be 2-3 shorter walks a day. It's the long walks that will do the damage.

lougle · 23/12/2013 21:48

I don't think this is what the OP meant Smile

I think the OP meant that instead of going out into the garden with her dog while she does a wee, for toilet training, etc., she's been standing in the doorway with a torch to keep dry.

Nothing to do with walks.

Welll....this is the time to crack toilet training. If she gets spooked by the howling gale you may find that she nips out for a quick wee then howls to get back in then poos on the floor, or similar. Much quicker and easier to crack it now.

coffeeinbed · 23/12/2013 21:52

That's exactly what I will do tonight. Grin
my dog is well trained now though - out, pee, in.
Job done!

DaddyPigsMistress · 23/12/2013 21:57

We live in a flat. I stand in the foyer with a cup of tea whlie the dogs have their pre bedtime wee then let them in.its cracking, dont even have to put a coat on or take off my slippers.

I do have to jog or cycle with them for an hour at 5am though. That bloody sucks

Snugglepiggy · 23/12/2013 22:00

Sorry but YABU .And agree an hour walk is too long in one session and doesn't exempt you from duties later on in the day.It doesn't work that way.Young puppies need frequent run outs, and regardless of the weather need supervision. We get ours in the New Year and will be out on the lawn in the cold, rain and dark.Wellies and a good jacket will be on.There are no short cuts if you want to train them well in those critical early weeks.

InTheBEEwitchedWinter · 23/12/2013 22:00

I'd actually say it depends on how big your garden is - when we got our pup we lived in a house with a huge garden, and it was just a case of dressing gown, wellies and maglite because she was scared to go out alone and I wanted to make sure she actually went.

She's 2 1/2 and perfectly toilet trained now so I had no issue letting her go out by herself at night, but if it as howling she actually needed someone along as she didn't like going out by herself!

Just bought a house with a stamp sized garden and I just open the back door for her and don't supervise.

PS: My dog phantom piddles - if she wants out but doesn't need to go she pretends to wee/randomly squats so it doesn't look like a wasted trip. Silly thing.
