No trains running until 10. Everyone will leave at lunchtime. But no, well known national company are staying open. So people are struggling to get in, and home. It's Xmas eve fgs!

Chunderella most of the places I have worked xmas eve is a normal work day so when I have an employer who lets everyone go at lunch it feels like a real treat, rather than why don't they give us the whole day IYSWIM.

I think most of the people at my work see it that way as well which is good Smile

Minnieistheglittermouse · 23/12/2013 20:11

Sorry, the train companies decide this random self serving policy and your beef is that firms should roll over and be told how they should open?

I think it's disgusting the way the trains operate. I understand why you're miffed as it does make a mockery of things but the rage should be directed firmly at train firms stupid superiority complex that they should get to tell business how and when to open!

The trains are running late because they have to clear the lines of trees due to adverse weather.

Plus, it's unlikely he'll get on the first train post 10am restart, as everyone will be trying to get on the same ones.

If it was a normal day with bad weather, there'd be an argument for working from home in the morning, trying to go in around lunchtime. But it's a day the office shuts at lunchtime, so what's the point?

scottishmummy · 23/12/2013 20:30

It's hellish weather.if it's non statutory service could work be done at home, calls diverted to mobile?

Marcelinewhyareyousomean · 23/12/2013 20:44

After years working in retail I'm delighted that extra half day for Christmas eve workers is one of the office workers perks. Same for those working nye.

I take work home and am expected to answer my blackberry up to 10pm and at weekends.

Saturday service on public transport and shite weather mean three journey will be hellish for all.

Marcelinewhyareyousomean · 23/12/2013 20:49

Your employers are being unseasonable and should close all day tomorrow. Wine

VeniseAndMe · 23/12/2013 20:52

I am a bit at loss there.
Is the weather the reason why people will struggle to be at work on time tomorrow even though they did manage today?
Is the weather the reason why your DH has more work to do atm?

So in your industry, people stop at lunch time on xmas eve. fair enough. We do too as the whole factory shuts down.
But people will struggle tomorrow to get to work because of difficult travelling condition.
Well, I would expect them to still do their best to be at work on time. Unless your industry is also the one which will happily accept that people will stay and at home and work from home at the first snow flake.

The fact that tomorrow is xmas eve is irrelevant and so is the fact that other people will work the whole day.

Thinkingofmyfabfour · 23/12/2013 21:04

I had no idea you were talking about the weather OP. UK is a big place, it's just a bit windy and wet here, not a problem. Maybe if you'd been more clear about that in your op people would have been more understanding.
In the circumstances (of ? Predicted stormy weather) I'd say safely first, if he's able to work from home then that makes more sense. I'd now say yanbu.

maddening · 23/12/2013 21:33

What weathet are you having ? Am in North west with a bit of wind and rain - have you got gails?

maddening · 23/12/2013 21:34

Gales :)

kali110 · 23/12/2013 21:59

Iv worked in retAil for over a decade and had to work on xmas eve and then boxing day and we were not allowed to book it as holiday under any circumstances

DontmindifIdo · 23/12/2013 22:07

We're in South East here, in an area that's a 25 minute train journey to the City, but a couple of hours drive if you do drive it (and then have the fun of trying to find somewhere to park in London) - and you'd be adding several hours if you can't use the M25, which also might be shut in sections tomorrow morning. They have annouced they aren't going to try to run any train services before 10am as they want to check the lines for fallen trees. it might be later than 10am before trains start.

Realistically, when trains do restart, they are going to be heaving. If you aren't at the start of the line, you won't get on the first few. It's conditions like this that "Emergancy working from home" policies are made for.

Would be very very odd for a company to try to make you go in. OP, tell your DH to tell his boss he can't get in before 11am but could log in and work from home all morning.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 23/12/2013 22:30

I've booked it off, despite the bribes. DW however is doing 12 hours tomorrow finishing at 8-9.30, in for an hour on Xmas day (and might cover if they're short), standard shifts afterwards and then 12 hours on NYD.

In our first 20 years of marriage we had three full Xmas days together. That's nursing for you.

FrostedButts · 23/12/2013 22:54

Trains were up shit creek tonight due to a landslide... I have a feeling I will be walking 2 miles to work tomorrow for a 3 hour day before the office shuts for Christmas. Sound ok? Maybe but it's along the seafront in gale force winds. I actually saw a girl get blown over earlier today and her shoes were blown off! She was tiny though, being a heifer I am probably safe from being blown into the channel.

dingit · 24/12/2013 07:41

What an awful night. We sleep in the loft, and at one point I thought our dormer would lift off.

Dh still here, no trains until at least 9 am. It's looking like he will work from home.

NiceTabard · 24/12/2013 09:00

Trains are all cancelled here all day Hmm

Good news is the tube is running all the way through which is brilliant!

I am surprised that some posters on here haven't heard about the expected adverse weather in parts of the UK. It's been headline news on BBC website for about 2 days Hmm Still there you have it.

NiceTabard · 24/12/2013 09:03

"Is the weather the reason why people will struggle to be at work on time tomorrow even though they did manage today?"

YES

The trains were running yesterday. (Albeit with a reduced service on our line even first thing in the morning even though the "weather" hadn't started up yet Hmm).

Trills · 24/12/2013 09:06

Back in October TLF travel alerts (which I highly recommend) posted that the wholly-underground Victoria line was running smugly :o

NiceTabard · 24/12/2013 09:14

heh

I am on a line which has a lot outside and it normally keels over. Really impressed that all lines are running all the way through - is a feat after teh weather last night.

nulgirl · 24/12/2013 09:36

YANBU. If he is finishing at lunchtime then it seems pointless. I work for a bank and all non-essential staff have been told to work from home today. I was planning to go in but I'm very relieved that I can stay at the house and not have to trek in. Most people have booked it off as holiday anyway so nothing is really going on today.

I love working christmas eve. I work for the nhs. Patients are so happy with lots of news. Sometimes they give a box of biscuits but each and every one wishes me happy christmas and i return the wishes. Usually said box of biscuits and others are opened in the office which gives a lovely party feel when i pop in for my strawberry cream, choc biscult. Happy christmas everyone. Have a safe journary to your loved ones. Xxxx

londonrach your post just brought me up sharp in the middle of a little grumble and sums up the whole spirit of Christmas. What a lovely person you are, and your patients are very lucky!

dingit · 24/12/2013 09:54

No trains until at least midday. Dh set up in home office and working happily, and being brought tea and Xmas biscuits by me.

Sadly, the reason he works over Xmas, is because he lost his dm, Df, and dsis in a short space of time, and finds Xmas very hard.
