He's called Isaac. It's not difficult. Nursery spell it wrong. Even done of his paternal family do....

I have a long name some people can't spell it I think you have to just admit defeat and sigh about it. it is annoying though

DamnBamboo · 22/12/2013 11:01

My son also called Isaac! you just need to accept that you, and eventually he when he's older, will have to keep correcting people.

HyvaPaiva · 22/12/2013 11:02

A relative spells my brother's name wrong on purpose. Say he is called Johnny. She spells it Johnnie because she has decided this spelling is the 'correct' version. She makes her point by capitalizing and underlining the -IE ending. It's so rude.

mrsjay · 22/12/2013 11:04

fwiw I honestly though Isaac was spelt Issac Blush

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 22/12/2013 11:06

People often get DD2's name spelt wrong, but it is not a name most people have heard before and I totally understand why people haven't the foggiest how to spell it. People generally can't pronounce it either. Its only 4 letters long, but I just think that its just the way it is for us.

However, Isaac isn't exactly unheard of so not sure why people can't look it up.

trikken · 22/12/2013 11:12

I have a toby and still get tobey or tobby. Some people will get any name wrong.

fifi669 · 22/12/2013 11:12

mrsjay that's how others have spelt it. The most frustrating part is obviously I've filled out forms for nursery, or the doctors etc, yet they still don't spell it correctly! His nursery Christmas card list with all the children's names on it went out with it spelt correctly, then half the cards were for Issac! I put a photo of him on fb and say eg Isaac making cakes. His great uncle will then write looks nice Issac underneath and ignore how I've spelt it. Drives me and DP mental.

mrsjay · 22/12/2013 11:14

the nursery should be spelling it properly that is just careless, I guess other people just write it how they think it should be , correct them i if they spell it wrong it must drive you insane, My name isnt unusual just long and i have had random Ks or Ys over the years

fifi669 · 22/12/2013 11:14

Tobby? I can see where they are coming from with Tobey, as in poss pronunciation but Tobby?

sonlypuppyfat · 22/12/2013 11:15

My DS has a traditional welsh name that doesn't even read as you would say it so I always spell it out as soon as I say it eg in doctors etc.

Sirzy · 22/12/2013 11:15

i think any names with double letters which aren't usual combiations will be spelt wrong. Nursery should have it right on printed lists and I would correct that but beyond that I think you need to just accept it is one of those things.

My name is Sarah and I still get people spelling it wrong, and not just Sara either, Sahra is quite a common way people spell if for some reason.

prettypleasewithsugarontop · 22/12/2013 11:17

My DD is a Cate (not real name) but all rels on dad side spell Kate Hmm even though we tell them every year Hmm

HowAboutNo · 22/12/2013 11:17

I know a Sophie... And people have been known to spell it Shophie. Which is hideous

trashcanjunkie · 22/12/2013 11:17

this thread has just reminded me that one of my ds has Isaac as a middle name.... Blush

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/12/2013 11:17

Ds is Fraser, not Frazer.
People keep getting it wrong but it's usually on gifts/cards so I can't be too fussed about it.

fifi669 · 22/12/2013 11:19

Long day trashcan?

Lol I have a 14 yr old Isaac and still get so many wrong spellings issac, Isaak... But have started seeing the name issac in its own right???

It's the wrong pronunciations that drive me mental - iss ack!!

I feel your pain!!!

HandragsNGladbags · 22/12/2013 11:22

I have had "Clawdia" and "Ameliah" for my two.

I think it's a little more understandable because I do it for Aiden and Aidan say where both are acceptable spellings, but I do make a note in CAPITALS on my calendar once I know the correct spelling.

kelper · 22/12/2013 11:22

people always spell my ds name wrong, they put a letter in that isnt there, even though when we send cards etc we always use his full name, but it still causes confusion!
we also use the shortened version to stop people being confused, and they just ignore it and spell it the way they want it spelt!
ds has started telling people his name doesnt have this letter in now!

tiamariaxxx · 22/12/2013 11:25

My eldest is jake and ive had 2 cards with neightbours spelling it "JAK"

MyNameIsKenAdams · 22/12/2013 11:26

I have a name with a G/J option and relatives still sometimes choose the wrong one.

I once got a card with J.... on the envelope and G..... inside - maybe they were hedging their bets.

I know Isaac is two a's and seems odd to me to spell it incorrectly, but everyone is different. Took me 25 years to learn it was Michael, not Micheal. Even now I still have to concentrate as I write it.

fifi669 · 22/12/2013 11:27

Oh the Michael thing threw me too! Though the only one I knew was Mr Jackson so it never came up luckily.

I have a very unusual name but it's not difficult, although the spelling is. My daughter has a rare traditional name that is said differently depending on whether it's from the ancient French or Scottish route and can be with or without the accent.

I've told DD from the start to make sure she politely corrects people immediately otherwise they don't know and will be embarrassed when they find out ages later that they've been wrong. Helping her to appreciate she's helping others, rather than correcting them, has really helped her to be more assertive and not see it as rude. I know this because it's something I've had to deal with all my life.

nkf · 22/12/2013 11:29

Some people can't spell. It's probably not just the child's name they muddle but lots of other words too. The nursery staff should get it right though.

DowntonTrout · 22/12/2013 11:38

It's one of those things. No one can spell my name. Even if they can, they often mispronounce it. Even people I have known for years.

It's not an unusual name. There is a celeb with the same name, spelt and pronounced exactly the same way. Still they don't seem able to get it right. Some people mishear and I am called variants of Michelle, Shirley and Sharon- non of those are my name.

It used to drive me mad but it never changes. It really isn't worth getting stressed about. You can correct people all you like but some people are just incapable of spelling/pronouncing names properly.
