To not like it when people refer to the meat as "the bird"?

It puts me right off! I only hear people say it at Christmas..."I put the bird in at about 10.00." and "The bird was in the oven.."

YACK!

You don't say "I've put the cow in" when you're having beef...or even "The mammal is cooking nicely"

So why "bird". And AIBU?

Well, presumably they can't fit a cow in their oven, but they can fit a bird in...

TheLostPelvicFloorOfPoosh · 21/12/2013 23:00

Erm, yes. YABU. It is a dead bird, not rainbow fluff and sweetly scented unicorn's breath.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 21/12/2013 23:01

But it is a bird.

Are you one of these meat eaters that doesn't like to think of the animal?

CranberrySaucyJack · 21/12/2013 23:01

YABU.

If you can't deal with the fact that you're eating a dead animal...... then have a nut roast.

AwfulMaureen · 21/12/2013 23:02

But why do they only do it with birds? Why? I know it's a dead bird....but I don't want to think of THAT! Mind you they say it with lamb too....Sad

because it IS a smegging bird?! a turkey is a bird right?! and you know that when the reference is made then it is made in reference to the turkey!? Yes sometimes I do like a slab of cow and regularly have pig chops.. God if referring to it as a bird puts you off I hope you never have to dine with my Dad (favourite "joke" is to bring a straw when eating steak and attempt to suck the blood out of it..) he would have a field day with you... Grin

MalcolmTuckersMistress · 21/12/2013 23:03

It's kind of correct though innit? Better than going all Latin and saying "oh I've just put a Meleagris gallopavo in t'oven, pour us another pin to sherry while it cooks"

AwfulMaureen · 21/12/2013 23:03

Pobble I think I must be. Sad I don't eat a lot of meat but I like chicken and duck....saying that is ok...it's when you call it a bird that I lump it in with Robin Redbreasts and things.

We had a turkey strutting around our back garden this morning. Not much of a bird as it couldn't fly back over the fence: DH gave it a helping hand! HTH Xmas Wink

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 21/12/2013 23:03

If you cant cope with the idea that a cute little turkey wurkey is what you will be eating then maybe dont eat cute little turkey wurkeys.

People cook birds. That is what they are doing so thats why they call it.

AwfulMaureen · 21/12/2013 23:04

waffly boak at your Dad!

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 21/12/2013 23:05

An you imagine an oven big enough to fit a cow in? That would be amazing! Like a hog roast, but a cow roast.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 21/12/2013 23:05

"The bird" is OK. My grandma used to call all poultry "foul", which I thought was a funny expression.

As in "the potatoes are on, the foul's nearly ready" etc.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 21/12/2013 23:06

Or is it fowl? May have had a little Wine this evening.

CoffeeTea103 · 21/12/2013 23:06

Get a grip ffs.

WaffilyVersatile · 21/12/2013 23:06

We had a hog roast at our wedding.. Head was on it n everything!

AwfulMaureen · 21/12/2013 23:06

Lol it's fowl I think.

OP posts:
ZingChoirsOfAngels · 21/12/2013 23:07

it is a bird.

so it is white meat as opposed to red meat or game.

and you do put the whole bird in the oven so it's factual.

I don't ever cook a whole cow or pig.
if I did I'd say "the pig is in the oven"

YABU

MidniteScribbler · 21/12/2013 23:11

But if you refer to it as "the chicken" or "the turkey" or "the duck" you're still identifying it with the living, breathing animal that it once was. "The bird" seems less identifying really.

VikingLady · 21/12/2013 23:30

Dribbling at the thought of a cow roast ..... The whole cow in the oven ..... Hmmmm

I now aspire to a really huge oven Grin

lougle · 21/12/2013 23:30

I am normally quite blunt about this stuff. My children ask what we're eating on a Sunday, and I reply 'pork - that's pig' or 'beef - it's cow'.

I was a bit disturbed though, when I phoned the butcher to ask how big their largest geese would be, to hear him reply 'we can't be sure, love, they're still force feeding them at the moment'. Sad

It did turn my stomach a bit.

aciddrops · 21/12/2013 23:34

Have nut roast instead - problem solved Xmas Smile

AwfulMaureen · 21/12/2013 23:35

Oh yuk Sad Dh is vegetarian but I really like chicken and sometimes ham...I think I'd like duck this christmas but can't tell DD "We're having duck" as she'd be all Shock

She likes meat. Can I lie and say it's "turkey"? SHe won't know...and she has no emotional attachment to turkeys.

OP posts:
AwfulMaureen · 21/12/2013 23:37

My oh yuk was actually about the force fed geese rather than the nut roast...I don't know how to make nut roast...is it even nice? DH might like that. Our plans have changed at last minute due to family illness so we're at home for once....which is lovely quite frankly.
