Or is this a fucking horrible attitude to another human being?

I have name changed about this and sorry it is a Facebook one. But I'm absolutely stunned at the post which has just come up on my timeline for a 'friend' who is an expat:

^It's been a stressful week with poor xxx (our helper) being hospitalised with pneumonia. Racing to hospital with her in an ambulance on Tues morning and now she is in the cardiac unit as she apparently has a "serious" heart disease.

All very sad. It was really lovely gettinghome from the hospital tonight being handed a lychee martini as I walked in the door by xxxx and a delicious meal cooked. Just what the doctor ordered'^

Is it just me or does that post show a monumental amount of insentitivety towards another human being? I found it monumentally callous.

Oh humanity.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 21/12/2013 21:24

"serious" comes across as she doesn't believe the person is genuinely ill and is just thinking of the inconvenience to themselves.

ChestnutsroastingintheFireligh · 21/12/2013 21:25

Well it would need wine in I guess

In my case it would be dh who did it for me.

bishbashboosh · 21/12/2013 21:27

In any case this Stinks if the general self absorption of lot of people on brag book!

saintlyjimjams · 21/12/2013 21:31

WTF is a lychee martini anyway? I obviously lived in the wrong bit if SE Asia Grin

MmeCinqAnneauxDor · 21/12/2013 21:31

It reads like 'oh, I'm such a caring and wonderful employer and my helper is so lucky to have me'.

Is she normally a bit of a drama llama?

ChestnutsroastingintheFireligh · 21/12/2013 21:33

I'm glad I've come off Facebook if this is the dirt if misreading into things that people do

ArtisanLentilWeaver · 21/12/2013 21:39

It is a very cold and detached comment in the vein of "Apart from that, did you enjoy the play, Mrs Lincoln?"
The woman, who sounds very ill indeed, is in no position to complain about her health being broadcast online (perhaps her family read facebook?) and the person who posted this sounds like a horrible individual.

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 21/12/2013 21:40

It's good you came off Facebook if that's the sort of stuff you were posting.

ChestnutsroastingintheFireligh · 21/12/2013 21:47

You know - I'm fed up of the amount of justness on here too. Picturesinthefirelight is no more.

ChestnutsroastingintheFireligh · 21/12/2013 21:47

Judg

LoisWilkerson1 · 21/12/2013 21:48

if people insist on publishing every thought that comes into their heads they need to expect not everyone will agree with their view, although I agree it isn't nice to bitch behind someones back. OP, did you say anything in reply?

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 21/12/2013 21:50

Aw no I'm only messing around Thanks

Fannydabbydozey · 21/12/2013 21:58

Does she live in Dubai?

The attitude towards "helpers" there and the sacrifices poor madams have to make is something else (I lived in Dubai)

There is a forum there which is breathtaking reading...

MamaMary · 21/12/2013 22:00

I read it that her DH greeted her with a martini. It did sound very callous after writing about her maid's newly diagnosed serious heard condition.

saintlyjimjams · 21/12/2013 22:03

Tbh I think it's probably badly worded than malicious. But it is lacking in self awareness with the wording.

Whattheactualfuck82 · 21/12/2013 22:08

I wanted to say something but my husband is also friends with the family and asked me not to so I haven't. I would much rather have said something direct...

It is the fact that she talsk about something so horrible in one breath then diverts to showing off in the next breath.

I really hope the maids family won't see it. I can't imagine how awful it would be to see a family member trivialised like that when they were seriously ill.

I could understand if it was 'Oh I've had a terrible week and a stiff drink' but this goes outside that to the realms of showing off. It just seems really callous to me.

Whattheactualfuck82 · 21/12/2013 22:10

SaintlyJimJams I doubt it was malicious as well. But I think the fact that someone can show that amount of disregard for another human being while still thinking they're a good person is shocking.

I have an ex-pat SIL iin Dubai, and that reads exactly like her and her fb friends. It is awful to read.

saintlyjimjams · 21/12/2013 22:37

You know her what so will have a better idea than us whether she is consistently this self centred or whether she's being crass/clumsy.

I would be fairly open mouthed reading it

quesadilla · 21/12/2013 22:51

I find it repellent, personally. It smacks of someone who separates the world into us and them and who is used to patronising and cutting themselves off from people who they consider to be of lower status.

On the other hand I've come across people like this before... people who are used to having "help" (au pairs/nannies/fully paid-up servants) and who have got used to treating them as almost separate classes of individual. I don't think it necessarily means this person has no compassion, its usually what they've grown up with and they don't know any better.

But yes, I wouldn't really want to be friends with someone like this.

LoisWilkerson1 · 21/12/2013 23:01

OP, take heart that most people on her friends list feel the same! she might lose a few after this! Just rely to every post from now on with ' and how is your helper doing btw?' even if she's posting about something unrelated. Mwahaha!

TheGhostOfPortoPast · 21/12/2013 23:14

Well it sounds like she doesn't give a shit, but knowing the attitude of many in certain countries towards "staff" this doesn't surprise me. Sad
