I was double checking how much bread I needed for bread sauce.

So I looked under bread. Nope.

I looked under sauce. Nope.

Finally looked at the menus at the front, noted it was called Traditional Bread Sauce so looked under T.

Yup.

Seriously?!?!?!

Well...AM I!?!?!?!

Mary Berry is fab, she doesn't even mistype 'night'

cjel · 21/12/2013 20:52

Torte, christmas puddings and 'ettys' sausage rolls drive me mad in Delias book. Am starting to remember things now but it is weird.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 21/12/2013 20:55

Nope. Nothing under "proper".

Oh, thanks, ElBandito. Does she say at what stage you can do that?

I was hoping to infuse the milk on Eve and then heat it up on Day and add the bread etc.

Not that I can see, ninja. Otherwise they would have been under Bread. Or Sauces.

Right?

Or Morocco, if it was Moroccan Bread Sauce.

Wink

I don't know the varieties.

DeckTheHallsWithBoughsOfHorry · 21/12/2013 21:03

Delia's indexing is indeed utter, utter shit. I have the black bible and frankly it's quicker to flick through than use the index.

Also, bread sauce is a nasty waste of time.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 21/12/2013 21:10

Xmas Grin Ninja.

Horopu · 21/12/2013 21:11

Def make on Christmas eve OP, I've put the breadcrumbs etc in then too. Longer infusing just gives the flavours more time to do their thing.

Bread sauce is fantastic, I love it. Not having a traditional turkey dinner though so none for me this year.

ElBandito · 21/12/2013 21:25

Hmm, Mary says "unless frozen bread sauce is best made on the day, otherwise it tends to turn grey." But she also hit her kids with a butter patt, so what does she know?

Freeze at the end of making. Thaw over night, whisk in extra milk if needed, reheat.

BadgersNadgers · 21/12/2013 21:38

badgers please do not give hedgehogs bread and milk, its really bad for them!! it gives them a poorly tummy

I suspect it would give anyone a poorly tummy. Badgers will never feed bread sauce to hedgehogs honest

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 21/12/2013 21:41

Thanks elBandito. Do I have to hit my son with a pat of butter? Or can I skip that step?

OP posts:
HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 21/12/2013 21:50

I've never had bread sauce. Hoping it's one of those things that tastes nicer than it sounds.

ElBandito · 21/12/2013 21:54

No, no a butter patt is a wooden thingy. I think you need two of them and in olden days they used them to cut a wedge of butter off the big block in the shop and shape it into a block to wrap for you to take home.

So you make a pat of butter with a butter pat.

My mum can remember seeing it done at the shops, she is VERY old!

dementedma · 21/12/2013 21:55

Bread sauce looks and tastes like vomit.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 21/12/2013 21:59

Oh. I didn't know that.

Every day's a school day!

PenguinsDontEatStollen · 21/12/2013 22:12

OMG. That is shocking indexing.

However bread sauce is vile, vile, vile. So she was trying to save you from yourself really Xmas Grin

shoofly · 21/12/2013 22:30

Just buy it in m&s tee - much easier. Although as I've never eaten it, made it or even seen it. I'm probably not the best person to listen too (nothing new there)

breatheslowly · 21/12/2013 22:32

I was amazed to find out that there are people whose job it is to write the index for books. I don't know how I thought indexes got there. It is a skilled job. It sounds like the year 10 work experience had a go instead of getting an indexer to do it. Shame on the publishers as it must be a big selling book, so the expense would have been worth it.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 21/12/2013 22:34

I am not going any where near M&S until after Christmas. No way no how.

OP posts:
LadyBeagleEyes · 21/12/2013 22:37

I love bread sauce with turkey, you just need a spoonful on the side.
I buy from M&S but it's so easy to make.

shoofly · 21/12/2013 22:43

It's a Christmas tradition here. Go to m&s early on Christmas Eve to pick up the stuff Tesco left off the Online order. Am crossing my fingers won't need to this year. If I do I might have to buy it to find out what it is!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/12/2013 22:46

Tee - you can definitely do the infusing in Christmas Eve - I think I make the sauce then too, and reheat on Christmas Day.
