To think this is way over the top?

First Christmas, mil bought dd exactly the same presents as Santa - because she WAS Santa in her opinion. Hmm
We told her that this would confuse dd. Santa delivers to our house and she could get something else. We gave her a heap of ideas. Last Christmas, mil bought an unbelievable amount of toys and clothes. Then complained that our house looked too full and dd had been spoiled.
Mil has just dropped off this years pressies. I worried when they took 2 cars to drop things off...
She has just told DH that she couldn't resist buying the Entire "Happy Land" range of ELC. WTAF!
She must have spent a fortune. I know I sound ungrateful. However, I just think this is insane. We now can't move for presents. We (Santa) are getting dd a balance bike and 2 Julia Donaldson books. Mil says she has to get dd lots of presents as we don't give her enough.
Argh!

Yanbu. Sounds way over the top.

A couple of solutions.

  1. Take at least half the stuff to MIL's at New Year, and ask her to keep it there for when you visit, because you simply don't have enough room at home.
  2. Strangle MIL before next Christmas.

Sympathies!

Oh my God!!!!! Are they mad?! No wonder you're annoyed. That's WAY over the top!

Perhaps she means well, but Jeez, the entire Happy Land range must've cost a fortune!!

Maybe take some back keep some for her birthday?

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 21/12/2013 11:42

Ok this is what you do.

Nothing.

You dont acknowledge the presents other than saying "thanks MIL- drop them over beside the tree"

You ignore the amount, the cost, her smug look, everything. You stop making it an issue because as long as shes getting under your skin she'll continue to do it. So dont react, pretend it is perfectly normal and she will soon het bored of no reaction. Although i have a sneaking suspicion, going by your username that you like to have something to gripe over so maybe it's not just her playing this game.

Good idea about keeping some of it back for her birthday.
I will try to just quietly seethe about it. However, it is difficult when come end of January, she will be complaining about not having enough money.
I'm a drama teacher, hence the name! Grin

I agree it's way ott. My ils are a little like this but they keep stuff at theirs so I think that's a good suggestion. Just politely explain that you haven't the room.

Ahem. Would she notice if you flogged some of it on eBay? Then the money could be used to buy DDs next size up clothes or something... Wink

BlackholesAndRevelations · 21/12/2013 11:49

She will be complaining about not having enough money?! Jeez! Hmm I would find it so difficult to bite my Tongue!

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 21/12/2013 11:52

Its not your problem if she has no money. Just smile and nod. She'll get bored all the quicker if hes making herself skint for no reaction.
