15 year old ds wants to go by supporters coach to a football match 90 miles away on Boxing Day

I have said no.

He is very upset. He would be going with a friend (also 15), getting the coach from home ground to the away ground, watching the match and getting the coach back.

I am worried about the other supporters, and the fact that if there was a problem he would be 90 miles away.

AIBU? He definitely thinks I am!

?? He will be fine. DSS 16 has been going for 2 years to away matches. As long as its a supporters coach they are taken directly to the ground, and even rowdy fans tend to keep an eye on younger lone travellers - they protect their own lol.

He will have a fantastic Boxing Day football experience, glad you have been educated :D

MintSpys · 21/12/2013 09:00

Thank you, yes just told him that mumsnet says I'm being unreasonable so he can go. I obviously didn't know what I was talking about!

He is now happy :)

And yes, the thought of how miserable he would be at home was not appealing :)

If there's two of them going, I see no reason to stop him. At 15 they should be able to go on an organised trip .

If it is the supporter's club organising it, if you are truly that worried, coul d you not contact the secretary and see if there is someone going who could just look out for them, and make sure they get back on for the trip home ok?

I think it is reasonable to be anxious, I would be, but I would let them go armed with strict instructions and contingency plans!!!

Presumably his friend's parents were ok with the idea?

aderynlas · 21/12/2013 09:00

I ve been to many an away day at Preston. Its a lovely ground and also has a brilliant football museum. Let him go on the coach op, it will be a good day away. Love Carlisles manager !!!

HorsePetal · 21/12/2013 09:01

It's understandable that you feel apprehensive but he'll be absolutely fine.

The fact that you have come on here to ask for opinion shows that your a lovely mum OP Smile

Any Carlisle Mumsnetters on here that could be on standby if needed - to reassure OP?

jamdonut · 21/12/2013 09:01

Oh good - you're letting him go!

Pan · 21/12/2013 09:01

There's very very little trouble at footie these days. Everyone else will be nursing Christmas hangovers too.

YABVVU and I can see why he'd be upset, esp as with matey going he will look like a mummy's boy.

Let him go. IF it was to see Man Citeh that would be a different matter.Grin

Follyfoot · 21/12/2013 09:03

Well done for changing your mind OP, he'll have a great day out. I LOVE Boxing day football Smile

YABU. He's got to start sometime. Whenever he does you are going to be worried, not to say crapping yourself. But it's got to come. Do it.

WigWearer · 21/12/2013 09:06

Aw, so glad you're letting him go. What a lovely Christmas Cheer thread!

Well done OP Thanks

auntpetunia · 21/12/2013 09:06

Am glad you realised YWBU, away supporter coaches are usually full of older Men and kids, your son and his mate could easily be the rowdiest ones on it. And to be honest Preston v Carlisle isn't likely to attract much hooligan element according to my DH! He'd be more worried if he was going to Barrow.

Hope your DS enjoys the match.

Onesleeptillwembley · 21/12/2013 09:07

Well done OP. it's not always easy to be convinced to do something that concerns you. Especially where kids are involved.

HorsePetal · 21/12/2013 09:07

Ah bless you - it's hard when they grow up isn't it?

Good for you x

SeaDevilscanPlay · 21/12/2013 09:08

I have been to quite a few football matches where I have had to travel back with away fans (I support Ipswich and live in the midlands).

They have all been lovely, except one set of fans who caused a riot because they had lost. However these were an exception rather than a rule, and it was a local rivallry which kicked things off. Many of the fans were actually trying to calm things down and were protecting us from the maniacs

I would let him go.

maddy68 · 21/12/2013 09:08

He's safer on a supporters bus
They are taken right to the ground. The police escort them to and from the bus
There is generally drinking on the bus but it's friendly banter.
I have been as a lone female and felt very safe.
I would let him go

mrselgar · 21/12/2013 09:13

My son did exactly that at that age. He was fine. The older supporters on the coach generally keep an eye on them.

maparole · 21/12/2013 09:27

At 15, I went one summer hols to work on a farm in Switzerland ... travelled there and back by train.

Good on you for being ready to change your view. Scary, but he is a young man now.

MintSpys · 21/12/2013 09:34

You have all made me feel so much happier - can you tell he is my oldest? Grin

aderynlas · 21/12/2013 09:36

Glad to see your son is going to the game op. Hope they have a great away day. Supporters coaches are good fun to travel with. Did all the lovely football mums net posters know its illegal to carry alcohol on these buses. Hot choccy or bovril all round.

WigWearer · 21/12/2013 09:37

Haha! Just a bit! Give him a wave and tell him MN says to behave himself and not worry his mum!

insancerre · 21/12/2013 11:14

well done for seeing sense
I expect the bus will be full of families and children, unlike the trains.
Have you ever been on the train with football supporters? Not plaseant at all. They are normally drunk, drinking cans of lager and shouting and swearing the whole journey.
I doubt the coach driver would put up with that!

ManAliveThisThingsFantastic · 21/12/2013 11:20

A supporters bus is much safer OP, they generally have a ban on booze, unlike public transport.

You made right decision, hope he has a great time Smile
