AIBU about Christmas, or is my dad? (I'm a teenager.)

Hi everyone! Been talking to my dad about excitement for Christmas, and he says that he thinks we've gone OTT on presents this year and that we should be equally excited about our own (Hindu) festivals, but he feels like we aren't...

We don't celebrate Christmas as the birth of Christ, just as a good time with all of the family and having fun. It means a lot to me because my parents work 7 days a week ad Christmas is usually the only day where they're both not working.

The presents IMHO aren't OTT, we just don't do stockings, so little things like pens are wrapped and under the tree! Xmas Grin

Also I should add that during Diwali we all went to the temple as a family, and I lit oil lamps every night and helped to clean the house as per tradition, so I'm definitely not neglecting my native culture either!

I shall explain my thoughts to him when I can trust myself not to snap... but MNetters what are your opinions on the matter?

To be honest this thread isn't much of a question, I just needed to vent with anonymity!

Ah

CuttedUpPear · 21/12/2013 11:02

I was just going to add my welcome to the OP and congratulate them on coming here for advice.

Then I saw the deletion warning - what on earth? ??Shock

I thought that MN was a resource for anyone, dads, non-parents alike.

I've seen teens asking for advice on here before - and this is a perfectly reasonable and respectful post.

CuttedUpPear · 21/12/2013 11:04

Of course if the OP is a journo, then yes, delete.

DameDeepRedBetty · 21/12/2013 11:04

I thought this place was for talking about family relationships? And that's exactly what OP is doing.

Take your hand away from that Big Red Button Julie!

RandallFloyd · 21/12/2013 11:05

Fwiw I can't recall a time a post was started with 'I'm a teenager' turned out to be genuine. I'm sure plenty of people could correct me but the ones I've seen always tune out to not be what they seem.

JulieJingleBellsMumsnet · 21/12/2013 11:09

We don't encourage younger teenagers to use mumsnet as some of the content isn't for really appropriate. We can see nothing to suggest that this poster is an older teen or a teen parent, who are of course welcome to use mumsnet.

RandallFloyd · 21/12/2013 11:10

That's fair enough Julie.

WorraLiberty · 21/12/2013 11:11

These threads always smell a bit funny to me anyway.

I mean the OP's made a thing about being a 'teen' and yet it's got bugger all to do with it really.

Reread the OP. I would guess from her writing that the OP is at least 14yrs old. And I don't think that MN is inappropriate for 14/15 year olds. Its quite tame compared to places like Reddit, or the comment sections of YouTube.

Jinsei · 21/12/2013 11:14

It means a lot to me because my parents work 7 days a week ad Christmas is usually the only day where they're both not working.

^^ Just tell your dad this. Hopefully he will understand!

Don't get why the thread needs to be deleted! Confused

JulieJingleBellsMumsnet · 21/12/2013 11:29

We've hear what you're saying and we're going to leave this for now but we're going to keep an eye on things.
