And to ask parents of one year olds :

How many naps your dc has a day
What time they go to be
And how long does it take them to fall asleep ?

At 1 ours would wake at 7am, have about 45 minutes nap at about 9.30am and a 2 hour (ish) nap at about 12.30. They'd be in bed for 7pm and sleep through until.........

.......wake at 7am ........!

Before that they both had a bit of a tricky stage settling to sleep. We did a gradual retreat type thing so that after a couple of weeks we could pop them in their cot, say good night and leave them to it.

Naps and bedtime were always the same. Quiet, dark room, grobag.

3 hours is excessive OP. You sound like you've have enough of his bedtime taking up your whole evening.

There are lots of tactics. You and your DP will need to decide on one that feels right for you, and when you feel is a good time to start with your new tactics and then go for it. Be consistent. Stick at it. Good luck!

My DGD is 1 and has two naps a day (approx. 9.30 - 11 and then 1 - 2.30). She goes to bed at 6.30, is usually asleep by 7pm and wakes at about 7am Xmas Smile

On the other hand, when my DGS was 1, he woke at 6am, had one nap from about 1.30 - 2.30 and was rarely asleep before 8pm....Xmas Hmm

With both of them, a regular bedtime routine of bath, PJs, feed, story and bed helped to establish a good sleep pattern (and prevent their parents' complete collapse).

Is he walking yet? DS went through phases of dreadful sleep just before he learned each new trick (crawling, standing, walking). I think his head was just too busy plotting mischief.

His night wakings increased too, but I believe he needed the extra milk to feed the growing brain. It will pass, and then you can walk him like a dog and wear him down.

DS2 has just turned 1. He wakes around 6.30ish. Nap 1 roughly 9.30 for 45mins. Nap 2 roughly 1.30 - 3. Bed at 7 (any less than 4hrs between nap 2 and bed and he won't go to sleep and bedtime takes even longer).

DS Is 1 tomorrow. He wakes 7ish, sleeps for an hour around 9.30 then another hour around 2. Goes to sleep around 7.30. So around 13 hours sleep per day.

If we sat in his room I think he would either scream or just not go to sleep. Our presence is too stimulating.
