To have not given the teacher a Christmas present?

Is it the done thing to give the teacher a present at Christmas?

I really, really like ds teacher, she does a fantastic job, but I didn't think that she'd want 30 tins of biscuits.

Ds now wants to give her our biscuits as some of the other children did. He said I'm not being very nice because I said that they were ours!

Feel a bit bad, perhaps I should have acknowledged her at Christmas.

Ds did make her a card.

DC just made some cookies and Choc truffles which was a lovely activity for them last wkend and went down well with teachers.

I also wrote card for DD's teacher as he has been bloody marvellous and I wanted to tell him that.

I tend to save more thoughtful gift to end of year and quite often if a teacher has indeed been bloody marvellous then I write to the head teacher and tell them as well!

IThinkThat · 20/12/2013 20:12

No gift and no card is find.
Giving a card is lovely.

Not giving a teacher gift is fine.

Giving a teacher a small gift is fine.

Giving the teacher a really expensive showy gift is a bit naff (but the teacher may like it Smile )

AndHarry · 20/12/2013 20:13

YANBU, a card is lovely. I come from a family of teachers and they honestly don't know what to do with all the chocolate they receive at Christmas so I eat a lot of it.

NotAsTired · 20/12/2013 20:22

Like mistle. I too have not been impressed with DS's teacher this year and so no card or present for her. But I have given cards and presents in the past. I find the whole thing a bit bizarre tbh, and I am a teacher! When I had my own classes, I always ended up with loads of boxes of chocolate, which I don't eat or smellies, which I never used. The smellies went into tambola prizes at the summer fayre.

BabyMummy29 · 20/12/2013 20:27

No you weren't BU at all. It's up to you to give something if you feel it's necessary or appropriate.

I gave to my DCs teachers all the way through primary apart from in P7 cos the teacher was horrible to my DD.

In the school where I teach, the parents try to outdo each other with their teacher gifts which is awful.

superstarheartbreaker · 20/12/2013 20:44

As a teacher I'd like to give you a word of advice; BOOZE!!!

BabyMummy29 · 20/12/2013 20:47

superstar I'm a teacher too and my heart sinks every time a child puts a dreaded bottle-shaped present on my table.

I HATE wine!

I have a cupboard full of it waiting to go to the next raffle/charity event

NicknameIncomplete · 20/12/2013 20:49

It is not the done thing in my house.

I dont see the need for all that rubbish. My dd gave her teacher a card that is enough.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 20/12/2013 20:49

This year I did a mug with knitted cover and put in a miniature Baileys and a sachet of hot chocolate. The kids decorated bags to put it all in. Easy, personal and hopefully useful.

I'm in secondary and get sod all.

NotAsTired · 20/12/2013 20:50

superstar there are a lot of schools which don't allow alcohol to be given as gifts.

shazbean · 20/12/2013 20:55

I hate feeling obliged to do it because everyone else is. It turns into such a circus.
We gave a gift at the end of summer term because DD wanted to and because she was changing teacher but otherwise she makes them a card which they appear to appreciate.
How much wine/biscuits can one person consume, cos let's face it that's normally what people buy barring the crazy spa day mega bucks gifts you sometimes hear of

candycoatedwaterdrops · 20/12/2013 20:57

I worked in a nursery and got loads of presents. It was very 'naice' area. My favourite and cherished ones were always the cards with stickmen on or a scribble on a page. I know it sounds cheesy but they really were lovely and thoughtful.

AuntieBrenda · 20/12/2013 20:58

To the OP
I'm a teacher. None of the teachers I work with expect gifts. If a kid made me a card, I'd cherish it, in fact I keep anything like that.

I didn't give the teachers or TAs anything this year. I think they are great, but time and money is tight, I go into school to help now and again and I didn't want to waste money on a "token" that they will have 29 others of. An end of year Oxfam Goat will do. I got a "guardian angel" crystal thing when a lovely teacher of my DS's was off sick for a scarily long time. She still gives me lovely smiles and chats with me when she sees me even though she is no longer Ds's teacher.

To the poster who did gloves though; that is a really good idea.

TheMuppetsSingChristmas · 20/12/2013 21:09

If I like the teacher (and ds has had one or two shockers!) then I sound them out a fortnight before hand about whether they'd like wine or not and what colour they might prefer. Then I know I'm going to be giving something they'll like. (We have a Virgin wine box every month or so and I usually choose a bottle out of that as it's vastly better quality than you can buy on the high street for the same price. For about £7 I'm giving them a £15 bottle of wine, and I've had feedback from many of his teachers that it's been particularly good stuff and much appreciated!).

This year I've also done a gift box with a few plain vanilla butter biscuits cut with a cute santa claus head cutter, and some christmas pudding look-alike chocolate truffles. Not costly and not time consuming, but look seriously impressive.

Mattissy · 20/12/2013 21:27

I've never sent a gift in, I usually give a little bag of brownies at the end of the year though. The amount of "worlds greatest teacher" stuff in charity shops is amazing, lol

damppatchnot · 20/12/2013 21:35

My dc took 15 gifts in!! ShockThankgod for 3for2 at Boots

koTinkaBell · 21/12/2013 09:34

no stealth about that one Grin

TheSylph · 21/12/2013 09:51

I've never given teacher gifts at Christmas.
I am a secondary school teacher and not a great fan of Christmas presents anyway so find it all a bit silly.
I do give gifts at the end of the academic year and the DC and I write a separate letter giving our appreciation.

rumbleinthrjungle · 21/12/2013 12:17

I'm a teacher, never expected gifts and would rather my families spent their money on more important things than me. I have kept every card every child ever made for me, and always will do, they're lovely memories to have of the child and family.

ConferencePear · 21/12/2013 13:26

As a secondary school teacher, I would prefer not to receive Christmas gifts unless it was a card with a little note of thanks for my efforts if they think I deserve them.
