...that if you're richer than the dreams of avarice, and your assistants who know about your and your wife's drug use have been taking the piss financially, your best bet would be to pay them off quietly and put the loss down to (easily affordable) experience, because any other path is going to make you look very foolish?

cross-post, Sarine, that's the stuff I'm on about.

edamsavestheday · 21/12/2013 13:56

Telegraph on Saatchi's smear campaign this is what Sarine is talking about.

Golddigger · 21/12/2013 15:13

edam. But you cant miss out that she has admitted taking them.

And that is the part that has done for her.

edamsavestheday · 21/12/2013 15:39

Has anyone asked the Grillos, or Saatchi, or R Hillgrove, what mind or mood-altering substances they have ever used - on oath?

Golddigger · 21/12/2013 15:42

It seems to me that some people move in higher circles than others, including some mumsnetters, where drug taking is commonplace.

lizzzyyliveson · 21/12/2013 15:47

It's common in all circles, Golddigger. Estates are full of druggies according to our local police and I guess they would know. They raid them often enough.

ComposHat · 21/12/2013 17:13

Although edam it is worth pointing out that Nigella's brother was the editor of the Sunday Telegraph for a decade, so it may not be hugely surprising they are taking a very pro-Nige line on this.

limitedperiodonly · 21/12/2013 17:16

golddigger Lawson wasn't meant to be on trial.

I've never done illegal drugs. I think I'm a tough person but I suspect if I was facing a determined defence barrister, able only to answer questions and not able to make statements, I'd come over middling to badly.

How do you think you'd do?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 21/12/2013 17:16

Drug taking is common in every part of society.

It is possible to have a circle of people around you who don't. None of my close friends or family have anything to do with drugs.

No one is writing about Mildred in the next street who likes a spliff with her wine on a friday. We hear about the dealers and the addicts who are stealing to feed their habit, and we hear about the celebs who can afford a habit.

It would be a very naïve person that thinks middle and upper class people who are not in the limelight don't take drugs.

Golddigger · 21/12/2013 17:18

I think I would do ok. But havent been put to the test.
Why?

Golddigger · 21/12/2013 17:19

As far as I know, I dont know a single person on drugs.

limitedperiodonly · 21/12/2013 17:24

Really, golddigger?

How many criminal trials have you watched as opposed to reading about them?

To be fair to you I'm going to say I used to be a court reporter and have seen hundreds. They're not what you'd expect from watching Kavanagh QC.

But maybe you know...

Golddigger · 21/12/2013 17:26

I havent the faintest idea what you are talking about.

Sparkletshirt · 21/12/2013 17:33

Cigarettes are drugs.

Alcohol is a drug.

They may be legal now, but they haven't always been.

If you think you don't know anybody who takes drugs, you're deluded.

caruthers · 21/12/2013 17:37

I never knew cigarettes were ever illegal?

Sparkletshirt · 21/12/2013 17:41

I may not have put that clearly caruthers but what is your confusion? That alcohol was never illegal, or that cigarettes aren't drugs?

caruthers · 21/12/2013 17:44

Are you suggesting that cigarettes are mind bending drugs like weed and speed?

Why did you say that cigs and booze were illegal?

Sparkletshirt · 21/12/2013 17:53

Aw bless. I'll rephrase that for you as you're struggling.

Cigarettes give you cancer, cost you lots and lots of money you could better use on yourself and your family and make you smell disgusting. BUT THAT'S OKAY BECAUSE THEY'VE ALWAYS BEEN LEGAL [FGRIN]

Alcohol gives you liver damage and gets you so off your face many people die in drink related fights and accidents, especially drunk driving. IT USED TO BE ILLEGAL BUT IT'S NOT NOW. So that's alright then.

Was that any better?

Sparkletshirt · 21/12/2013 17:55

Look!!! There's an [FGRIN] in there you can use to completely miss the point Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin

limitedperiodonly · 21/12/2013 18:00

If you're ever a witness in a criminal trial golddigger I wish you luck.

And I think you probably do know people who use illegal drugs. They just haven't told you.

caruthers · 21/12/2013 18:02

You carry on excusing NL and playing drug bingo whilst stating falsehoods and we'll agree to disagree.

I raise your "Bless" with a WTF.

Mumsyblouse · 21/12/2013 18:03

I don't know many people who use illegal drugs now in their everyday lives- but if you talk about historically, then yes. I think you would be hard pushed to know no-one who has ever used cannabis in their entire lives, even if it were the sons and daughters of your friends. Indeed, it would be nigh on impossible unless you had very few friends

friday16 · 21/12/2013 18:05

When has alcohol ever been illegal in the uk? When has tobacco ever been illegal in the uk?

OP posts:
Golddigger · 21/12/2013 18:08

Plenty of friends. Know plenty of people. But yes, I expect there might be someone I know of who uses them but hasnt told me.

Mumsyblouse · 21/12/2013 18:11

NL didn't deny her drug use, she admitted it! Her lovely assistants said they thought she had used cocaine, but there was no physical evidence provided, and they were forced to admit they had never seen her taking any drugs (strange, given they lived with her for 20 years on and off and she was apparently doing this daily). Saatchi also said he had never seen her doing anything either in the ten years of their marriage (despite the allegations in the email and again, seeing her daily). It's amazing, given the extent of her drug use, that all the people who lived in her house testified they never ever saw her do anything, not even have a joint in her own house.

So, the only person who admitted to anything illegal was NL. This does not make her go down in my estimation- she could have simply denied it given their lack of evidence and lack of desire to perjure themselves by saying they had seen her doing it, but she chose to tell (some) of the truth.

I don't know why she is on trial over her drug use, given that the sisters provided no evidence whatsoever for this alleged 'deal' to buy their silence, especially as they then said they saw no actual drug-taking anyway, not even secretly/out of the corner of their eye in over 20 years of living in the same house!

Someone is not truthful, for sure.
