Surely, this is what they want, why does the news have to show over and over the him being run over, him being run in the road, those two bastards with bloodied knives, publicise their rants from court etc.

These people wanted a soap box to air their nasty hatred views, the UK press have now given it to them.

It makes me sick!

Yes I did turn over!

Sorry rant over Sad

Yes, I was listening to pm, and they broadcasted one of them justifying what they'd done. It felt wrong to me.

missingmumxox · 19/12/2013 22:34

I must admit I turned it off as well, I don't care about them, I care about him, I am pretty proud to say I don't know their names, I actually don't mind that their reasoning is broadcast that is total valid but the film footage with his blood on their hands was utterly uncalled for, that was ITV, BBC gave me a warning so I switched channels before.

They use the excuse we can find this anywhere on the internet...well then don't show it, if I was interested I would find it!

applepieinthesky · 19/12/2013 22:40

I had exactly the same thoughts. DP sat here watching it but I couldn't even look at the screen Sad

Mymumsfurcoat · 19/12/2013 22:44

Me too, I couldn't believe when one of them gave evidence and he got about 10 minutes on the 6 o'clock news. The judge should have imposed a media blackout, and the press should be ashamed of themselves. (Like that's ever going to happen)

GiveItYourBestStockings · 19/12/2013 22:47

YANBU. Justice needs to be done in public but they should not have been given the coverage which they have received, as it was exactly what they wanted. I think it will encourage other evil people to do the same. They bought their headlines with poor Lee Rigby's life and he deserved better.

creighton · 19/12/2013 23:08

they have only had today with wide media coverage as the verdict has been given. other than that there has been no widespread information broadcast about them and the case. the news has been full of other stories.

they are not 'given' the coverage, we are given the coverage so that we know who we are dealing with and how these people are indoctrinated. the documentary on now has lots of coverage of his parents and his friends and colleagues.

you need to see evil so that you know how to deal with it.

BackOnlyBriefly · 19/12/2013 23:17

Yes, we do need to know about these things and secret courts cause other problems too.

friday16 · 19/12/2013 23:18

These people wanted a soap box to air their nasty hatred views, the UK press have now given it to them.

And it's making them and their cause look so good, too.

BitOfFunWithSanta · 19/12/2013 23:18

All I've seen is tributes to Lee Rigby, and much-needed discussion on how to prevent young Muslims being drawn into extremism.

GiveItYourBestStockings · 19/12/2013 23:19

You must see different media to me. I have seen stories throughout the trial, of them claiming the murder was ordered by God, of them claiming to be soldiers, of how they tried to cut Lee Rigby's head off...

FreudiansSlipper · 19/12/2013 23:21

Yabu

I agree we need to learn from this and need to understand why some young men amd women are turning to groups that are extreme and violent being In a gang and being part of a religious group that hates the enemy is not so different

Do agree we do not need to see the same pictures of the attacks and over again

IamInvisible · 19/12/2013 23:23

I agree with BOF.

I have seen the tributes to Lee Rigby and I have seen discussions about how the men may have become drawn in and radicalised. I have got Panorama on in the background atm but am not really watching it.

This is a much needed discussion, IMO. We do need to try to prevent this radicalisation for all our sakes.

thebody · 19/12/2013 23:24

Very very upsetting as was the coverage of the killing of Georgia.

Absolutely dreadful.

Best though to know the truth of what's out there so we have a chance if dealing with it.

Awful.

creighton · 19/12/2013 23:26

this case hasn't been the lead story every day for the last few weeks. there have been other leading stories, the hurricane, ian Watkins, the grillo/Lawson trial, nelson mandela. they have not had an unfettered 'recruiting programme' provided by the media.

Salmotrutta · 19/12/2013 23:34

I disagreed with the repeated showing of the video footage taken at the time of Lee Rigby's murder.

And they showed it again today.

It served no real purpose except to upset people who may have known/been related to Lee Rigby.

This sort of gawping voyeurism has been seeping into the BBC increasingly and I think they need to take a long hard look at their standards.

We can't, unfortunately, do much about the likes of Sky and their dreadful salacious news coverage but we are paying a licence fee for the dubious pleasure of funding the BBC.

A BBC that used to be the gold standard for the rest of the world.

Sorry - that was a bit of a rant... Blush

thebody · 19/12/2013 23:37

FreudiansSlipper yes agree your post.

Salmotrutta · 19/12/2013 23:37

Should add, yes, we often have to listen to horrible reportage but the continual showing of video footage like that of the aftermath of a death is serving no purpose.

Poor Lee Rigby's mother watched it unfolding on the news at her work - unaware that the victim was her son. Awful Sad

FreudiansSlipper · 19/12/2013 23:39

I am watching panorama and what it highlights is two young men that were drifting seems that they did not fit in with society first involved in gangs then another group were they felt they belonged

We do not need to worry about young Muslims millions are not violent we need to worry about young men and women who are lost and fall under the influence of those that want to cause harm at this point of time in our society it is sometimes Islam and with what is going on in the world displaced anger is often easy to manipulate other times in history it has been other religions/political groups

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 19/12/2013 23:43

Horrible, sensationalist reporting. I've noticed the same this week with the Ian Watkins case; practically every mention has said jailed for crimes including [the worst one - don't want to type it]. Why spell it out every time?

friday16 · 20/12/2013 07:28

Why spell it out every time?

Because newspapers that were filled with stories like "a nasty man we won't name has been jailed for a nasty crime we won't mention following evidence from nasty people we can't describe about nasty events we can't talk about" might be considered a little patronising for anyone aged over about five?

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 20/12/2013 08:52

But problematic when on hearing the 3pm radio news your young children start asking questions about it, weeks after the details had been made public.

limitedperiodonly · 20/12/2013 09:12

YABVU

Margaret Thatcher imposed a blackout on the IRA to deny them 'the oxygen of publicity'.

Stupid.

Personally I'd have enjoyed listening to Gerry Adams or Martin McGuinness trying to justify the IRA murdering and maiming innocent people.

formerbabe · 20/12/2013 10:05

What would you prefer? Press censorship? North Korea would be your best bet...

I would rather their disgusting views were out in the open than hidden away..I really feel awful for Lee Rigbys family though and was in tears at the photo of his little boy.

friday16 · 20/12/2013 11:52

But problematic when on hearing the 3pm radio news your young children start asking questions about it, weeks after the details had been made public.

As the events in question took place at school run time, I think that cat is pretty much out of the bag.

Nancy66 · 20/12/2013 12:15

It's only now that newspapers/TV can publish certain facts as they may have previously prejudiced a trial.

it's a huge news story and it's inevitable that the outcome of a murder trial will make big news too. And so it should.
