To think school could have had different prizes

My lovely dd has won an ipad mini at school .All the kids who work well and dont get detentions or lose house points get put into a draw . The top prize was the ipad mini.

This is a great prize and excellent to be the recipent of.But why oh why does it have to be the year we scrape together the money to buy her a samsung tablet?

Im gutted that our present is useless now. We tried so hard to get her the tablet in recognition of her hard work and general loveliness at home .

So sad(but happy for her).

I think the people making catty comments are being pretty harsh to be fair...
Obviously it's not the worst problem in the world but I'd be pretty gutted if that had happened to me... Of course Op wants her child to love her Christmas present and now it will be overshadowed/made redundant by her prize.

Op, I hope you can find something equally as exciting for your daughter to open on Christmas morning and congratulations to her for winning the prize!!

ineedanexcuse · 19/12/2013 20:55

Thank you to everyone who understands how gutting this is. The more I try to think of a way to sort this out the more of a headache I get.

I now have to try and return the tablet to Argos. This shouldnt be a problem as it hasnt been opened. I think they will only offer vouchers for technology returns. Is this true do you know?

Also I need to get her something else to replace such a big present. Everything else I have for her is very cheap and cheerful .

She wont need a phone or a camera. She has a tv in her room and we have the usual family wii and PS type games. I could cry because I thought I was finished bloody shopping and have to trawl round the shops at the worst time.

How old is she? Would she appreciate clothes, jewellery, perfume?

I know you are disappointed but she has won something fab so try not to let her know you are disappointed. She must be very excited.

Snargaluff · 19/12/2013 21:02

My school is giving an xbox1 (!!!!!) in a prize draw for 100% attendance!!!!!

Mamafratelli · 19/12/2013 21:02

If you can only get argos vouchers what about a watch or depending on her age/interests they have some Kardashian Kollection jewellery.

Snargaluff · 19/12/2013 21:03

Sorry I realise that's not relevant to your op, but just wanted to get that off my chest

Floralnomad · 19/12/2013 21:05

Nothing to do with the problem of the OP but wouldn't it be nicer if the school got a small voucher for all the children who fulfill the criteria rather than giving such large prizes to just a couple of children - very unfair IMO.

jamdonut · 19/12/2013 21:06

My daughter's 6th form gave each of them an i-pad mini this year! When they finish 6th form it is theirs to keep!

I'm glad...it has taken the onus off of us for this Christmas!

I would just exchange the tablet for something else...or get her some decent accessories to go with the i-pad, plus an i-tunes voucher.

ineedanexcuse · 19/12/2013 21:11

She is 13 and doesnt really wear watches which is a pity as I think she has several as gifts. Maybe some jewellery would fit the bill but Im not sure what her friends have ( its all about friends at 13)

Snargaluff - an xbox1 !! Its madness this close to Christmas. I really wouldnt have a problem at the end of the school year -or anytime outside of december really. What on earth did they think they were doing ?

Oh and she has no idea that I feel so gutted. All smiles and congratulations to her .Its not her fault and at any other time it would be simply fantastic.

Well done to your DD & sympathies to you! Is there anything else fabulous for a similar value that she would love? What about something really frivolous that you would either struggle to buy or simply not afford through the year....shoes, jewellery, concert tickets for One Direction (or whoever she likes?!)
Sorry you're getting snarky remarks from some - one in particular is on a role this evening!

Snargaluff · 19/12/2013 21:20

I'd be a bit gutted in your position too.

Mamafratelli · 19/12/2013 21:23

I'd say wow now you've got this what would you like for christmas. Saves you guessing and failing.

I wouldn't buy a big present to replace the tablet unless you can think of something that would really be wanted and appreciated. It would be really easy for you to make a bad purchase while you are upset and have Christmas pressure combined with not much time.

If your dd already has a camera, how about one of those plugs that takes the camera card and transfers pictures to the iPad? And a nice iPad case and some iTunes vouchers?

WooWooOwl · 19/12/2013 21:49

Lisa, it wasn't an attendance prize.

OctopusWrangler · 19/12/2013 22:47

If the item is sealed and you're within the returns time I don't see why argos will refuse you a refund. It's games consoles that have restrictions on them.

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 19/12/2013 22:51

You have my sympathies, it is a pain when you have thought and thought about what to get them and some bugger gets there first

Not sure what you could do apart from return it and get her something like a camera or camcorder....not much use I know

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 19/12/2013 22:52

Ooooh no, ignore me woowooowls suggestion is much better

AchyFox · 20/12/2013 01:12

Why are the school doling out Ipads ?Hmm

Weird.

SecondStarToTheRight · 20/12/2013 02:48

How about a net book (a mini laptop) - will be useful for her school work if the family pc is older & slow.

I think argos do them

ineedanexcuse · 20/12/2013 07:29

We are going to get her a good camera as she has some occasions coming up where good photos would be an assett.

Not as exciting as the tablet would have been but a good present nevertheless.
