To think this mother was being precious re school talent show?

And that the school shouldn't have indulged her?

My DD's primary school always have a xmas end of term x factor style talent show. Each class provides 2 acts and 2 judges. The idea is for it to be fun with no very low marks or unkind comments.

Each class has auditions for all the DC who want to take part to choose the 2 acts that perform in front of the rest of the school. In DD's class (year 5), three DC had the same top score so a second vote was held to decide which two would get through. Two got a higher mark second time around than the third DC "Amy" so were put though to the main show which is today.

Apparently (according to my DD and various other DC), Amy's mother then went into school to speak to the deputy head and said Amy was terribly upset about not getting to the final after getting so close, the second vote was unfair and what could be done about it? The deputy head created a special role for Amy, opening the show with her act.

AIBU to think that this is ridiculously over indulgent of both Amy's mother and the deputy head and not fair to all the other DC (many of them younger than year 5) who were not voted into the final and did not whinge about it and "get their mums up the school".

NB: my DD didn't even audition, wasn't bothered about it, but is now indignant about Amy's "special treatment".

I think the 'audition rounds' are cruel and little more than a popularity contest, tbh, but if Amy's mother was happy enough for her to audition in the first place, she should have agreed with the outcome.

100% agree and i think neithrer the school or her mother are doing her any favours by indulging her. She should be told that there are winners and losers, and she was voted out. Welcome to the real world kiddo. Plus it's actually unfair on the 2 that made it through, what's the point voting if the result is not followed!

this must stop and stop now before amy turns into a monster! yanbu - what a silly load of old nonsense. i really don't understand parents who just can't accept that their children will be disappointed sometimes.

Oh dear, I seem to be in the minority - it sounds like quite a good solution to me! She came a very close third (closer than other children??) and so had a role created for her as a 'runner up' opening the show. However, the two children who scored more highly are still the 'real' performers for the class, and still very much separate.

They're year 5 - can't we bend the rules a little to avoid upset? Life gets pretty tough and pretty cruel soon enough when you're an adult. Why start that earlier than we have to?

But I can be a bit 'bleeding heart' about this type of thing!!

Struggling100, they are yr 5 so 9/10 and off to high school in less than 2 years not age 5. Imo old enough to have to deal with a little light upset sometimes. Also there may have been other children from the other years who were a very close third but they had to accept disappointment and not get a special role created for them.

Actually I agree SantaLopez that the audition rounds are a bit cruel and I posted on that very topic a few years ago saying I thought that there should be a secret ballot and the number of votes should not be revealed as the school does a lot of such votes for competitions, school council places, etc and it is very hard on kids to know that nobody has voted for them which apparently does happen. That being said Amy and her mother knew the score and should have been able to take defeat in good grace imo!
