To wonder why people increasingly refer to places not in London as 'in London'

I genuinely don't understand why people say they live in London when in fact they live in a town within the M25.
Croydon is not in London is it? Nor is Kingston. I never remember people referring to these towns as London years ago. Is this a new thing?

I don't know! It appeared on active threads but last post was last year. Sorry all....but makes a change from COVID

I’d say Kingston and Croydon are in London.
Thought you were talking about “London” Luton airport or Warner brothers studio tour London (which is actually in Leavesden).

The outer London boroughs never really wanted to be part of Greater London. When the GLC was set up they fought like hell to stay out. It's a relic of that. BTW my home town, Croydon, is in Surrey, not London even if parts of it have an SE postcode!

Croydon is always being accused of not being in London (and simultaneously not being in Surrey either). Now apparently we’re in fucking London when it’s a bad thing!

We’ve got a lower rate of COVID than places in the middle of the countryside - way under the national average - but suddenly we’re in a high risk area

I don't think the argument that people pretend to live in London to look good is true or even impressive. I'm originally a South Londoner and West Londoner and I would have rather have grown up in Richmond.

The clue is in the name “the London Borough of Croydon”.
