Green Flag Breakdown Cover renewal

I have received a letter with a quote for the next year. I have gone online and got lots of other quotes which are much cheaper.

i emailed Green Flag and told them. they said the quotes were cheaper as I would get a 'new customer discount' and that I could email them to see if they could reduce our premium via the 'Retention Department'.

AIBU to think they could have given me the best price to start with?Confused

Just to be clear-I have been with Green Flag for 4 years and it was a renewal letter.

I received a renewal notice from my insurance company. I went online and got a cheaper quote from the same company and took it. They just try it on hoping people won't check things out and auto renewal.

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 13:33

It makes me not want to renew with them even if they can bring the price down. Grin 'Retentions Team' wonder what that's code for?

It doesn't pay to be loyal, existing customers always get screwed over—vote with your feet (or wheels)

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 13:45

It reminds me of that ad with Mark Benton was it? 'Brand new customers only'. Sad

I check every year when I get my renewal notice, it has always been cheaper on the comparison websites. I phone my insurance company, tell them the details and they've always renewed at slightly less for me. I've given up complaining about it.
If ever in the future they won't quote me cheaper I'll take the comparison site deal.
I haven't moved insurance companies because I know the one I have always pay out or respond quickly to anything that happens which is more than you can say for a lot of them.

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 15:41

I think if it was anything other than breakdown cover I would be the same bee. House, cats and car insurance all with the same company.

Is Green Flag any good? I get cover free with my bank account but as I'd never heard of them and wasn't sure what their coverage in Scotland was I've kept my AA membership.

ilovepowerhoop · 14/12/2013 16:23

I have Green Flag through my account as well and have used them 2 or 3 times and they have been great (I am in scotland too)

itchychin · 14/12/2013 16:32

They reduce the quote in line with web if you call them. V. annoying though as it makes you feel they are just hoodwinking you.

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 16:34

I have called them out once and they were good. But the AA quote is cheaper.

go to
topcashback
or
quidco
and get a new quote plus cashback

cheapest way

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 16:47

I saw something about that merci, wasn't sure if there was a huge catch?

manticlimactic pretty much nails the reason why your renewal is high.

I used to work for probably the best known UK company (which has been mentioned upthread ;) ).

You CAN take it off auto renewal, insist and it will be done. They'll try tell you it'll cost more but it's bullshit - if the price is too high then call again.

Even if it auto renews at a ridiculous high price - call as soon as possible and complain, it can be reduced to something your happy with and you'll be refunded the difference.

Pay attention to dates on letters sent to you - it has been known that the auto renew letters that should be sent out around 6 weeks before (to give you the customer a chance to call if you're unhappy with it) to actually reach customers AFTER the auto renew has happened.

It's always cheaper for new customers - it's simply to get new business.

If you use the service the maximum no of times that your policy allows then you can expect the quote to go up next year as there is whats known as a service premium. If I remember correctly an increase of roughly £60 was typical and not what they try to quote.

Also while I'm here - Eg,

you bought cover for your car 6 mths ago but you've now got rid of that car and bought a new one from the garage that comes with free breakdown repair for 1 year.

-You don't need 2 sets of cover but the one you bought for the old car can't be refunded - many people either A) just leave it or B) call to try and cancel it - you CAN simply freeze it.
Call up, explain and give the date your free cover runs out and the account will be set to kick back in then - you don't need to lose out, it's your money that bought it and not many customers are aware.

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 18:15

Green Flag also have an admin fee of £10.60 to cancel the policy but they did say that was mid-policy rather than just choosing not to renew.

Ime breakdown cover providers are among the very worst for trying to get away with jacking up the prices for loyal customers.

I overpaid last year (with the RAC) because I forgot to tell them we moved house, so I didn't see the renewal notice in time to ring and haggle, and only realised when I checked my cc statement weeks later and saw they'd taken the payment.

I phoned up and said I realise I'm in the wrong but is there anything you can do? And the nice man gave me a month's free cover. So it's worth asking. I'll be more on the ball next year!

mercibucket · 14/12/2013 22:09

no catch at all, i have used it for years. go for it!

GiveItYourBestStockings · 14/12/2013 23:17

The AA halved my renewal quote when I called and asked if they were having a laugh. It's a tedious ritual!
