To not think it is the end of the world for ds to play on minecraft

goodgrief54 · 14/12/2013 12:51

As the title suggests my ds loves to play on computer games especially minecraft. He is not on there 24/7 but I do let him go on for an hour after school in the winter as he is really tired at the mo. aibu to think there is some educational value? He is really quite creative with the things he builds but my friend has made me feel like I am the world's worst mother for allowing pc games after school.. any thoughts?!

OK, so I have read countless threads extolling the virtues of Minecraft. I give in! Where do I buy it for the laptop/ipads and will they have the same game on each one? I mean will what they build be on the laptop copy of the game and the ipad copy of the game?

Rummikub · 14/12/2013 13:24

There's more than one! Shock

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 13:25

I believe you have to download something called 'Steam'. Then you can buy Minecraft and it's all done online. Costs £17.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Rummikub · 14/12/2013 13:25

For the ipad, go to App Store. Think it's a fiver. Not sure about if it will be same on laptop. Does it need to be same account? I know my two find each other somehow when they play.

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 13:26

Steam

Rummikub · 14/12/2013 13:26

I have no dc here to ask for confirmation.

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 13:26

I think each gadget has to have Minecraft bought for it?

mypussyiscalledCaramel · 14/12/2013 13:26

My D's plays on mine craft at every opportunity.

He has it on the PC and his tablet, he has even persuaded his aunt to get the x box version.

If we didn't have it, he would drive me nuts.

Any parents who say their kids don't go on it are big fat liars IMO, because the kids have probably got friends who have it.

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 13:27

Me neither Rumm. I am pretending I know something. Grin

Nanny0gg · 14/12/2013 13:27

What sort of age is it suitable from?

Rummikub · 14/12/2013 13:30

Grin sparkling. My dd would be chuckling if she knew I was on a thread about minecraft.

My youngest dd is 8 and she's been playing for about a year I think. Not as obsessively as my eldest though who behaves as if its oxygen Hmm

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 13:32

I have bought DS2 'Minecraft for Dummies' for Christmas but i want to have a read Rumm. Oh and the Minecraft Annual. Grin

happytalk13 · 14/12/2013 13:36

Ignore your friend. It's not her place to comment.

JSYK - there's a Minecraft USS Enterprise out there that apparently a few kids built together - seems far better than some things kids could be doing.

theladyrainy · 14/12/2013 13:36

Minecraft is educational and also it's a sandbox game so players can access the game at their own level so it's suitable for all abilities.
(World of Warcraft isn't particularly violent -it's a12cert I think)

sofahogger · 14/12/2013 13:38

My ds is obsessed with it and loves watching stampy longhead on YouTube. It's fun to watch and no swearing.
I do have to limit the amount he's playing as otherwise he'd be on there all day. He's nearly 7.
And ydnbu.

Rummikub · 14/12/2013 13:38

Sparkling, keep it for yourself and astound him with your secret new found knowledge?!

IneedAwittierNickname · 14/12/2013 13:40

Ds2 asked me this week.if he could play. In my mind I think I'd mixed it up with world of warcraft (partly because they both end in craft, and partly because I know nothing about gaming)
I asked a friend, she reassured me that it was all fine, so I agreed he could play. Then I realised it wasn't free, don't know why I assumed it was tbh!
Now the poor soul has to wait until the new year!

cranberryorange · 14/12/2013 13:40

Nanny0gg Its suitable for any age. Ds has been playing since he was 4 and is now a bit of a designer extraordinaire with his aircraft and castles!

It is like an online lego game which someone above mentioned. Perfect for creative little minds.

octopusinasantasack · 14/12/2013 13:43

mypussy I am telling the truth, honest! My DS has never been on it, in fact he complains that it is all the others at school talk about and he feels left out but he's not interested in computer games. I almost want him to play it so he's not left out :(

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 13:43

Should I be Blush that DS2 built a KFC in his 'world' or whatever they are called.

FunnysInLaJardin · 14/12/2013 13:45

my 3 yo and 8yo have spent all morning playing together on it while I had a lie in and DH watched Sherlock. YANBU at all

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2013 13:48

I believe Creative Mode is what you need to start with.

But now we are in the realms of 'buying servers' which is a whole new can of worms involving owning a server and letting people on it-like being the boss.
BUT you may let someone on who bombs your KFC and that's where trouble could start.......

Please someone tell me I have got that right...

IneedAwittierNickname · 14/12/2013 13:49

octopus my Ds1s never played it either, and he doesn't show any interest in it. In fact, a fair few of my friends have children who don't play.

DoItTooBabyJesus · 14/12/2013 13:51

There are hundreds of tutorials. Nearby gamer is virtually resident in our house!

Willabywallaby · 14/12/2013 14:03

I am currently fighting off my DS1 to play minecraft on the ipad.
