To quit my temporary job?

willowash · 14/12/2013 09:03

Been working for 2 weeks now, i enjoy the job and worked all hours they offer me, some are until 8pm and with 2 dd's thats hard because i hardly see them. Anyway when i took the job, the manager rang and told me they are looking to keep people on afterwards, so i have worked my but off to make a good impression. I spoke to the manager last night and was told there was no chance of them offering me a job. Aibu to be pissed off with this and thinking of not going back? Also found out they are only paying me for 2 days before xmas the rest i will get in january!

I don't understand why you'd quit. Whatever he said about looking to keep people on, there was never any guarantee. It was a temporary job, you say you enjoy it and you will get paid for all the hours you worked your butt off (what else would you have done? A half-arsed job?). What will you do for money if you quit? Any job is better than none, esp one you enjoy, and there's still a chance it could lead to more work if only because it's usually easier to find work if you're working already.

pinkdelight · 14/12/2013 09:13

Also if you've only been working for two weeks I would t expect to get paid before Christmas unless it's a very informal set-up. And can't see how the dd thing is an issue. It's only some shifts, only been two weeks and not going to be permanent.

LightastheBreeze · 14/12/2013 09:18

If you like the job I would just carry on with it. You could end up with something worse. I don't think there are any guarantees nowadays with jobs. How long is the temp position for

BlackholesAndRevelations · 14/12/2013 09:43

No don't quit just because they're not keeping you on! You took a temporary post, so you should honour it. Don't throw your toys out of the pram!

SilverApples · 14/12/2013 09:46

Do this job well, finish when you are supposed to and you can use them as a reference for the next job. And just because they aren't hiring at the moment doesn't mean that a job might come up with them in a few months time.
Unless the manager gave another reason why they wouldn't be offering you, specifically, a job.

Glitterfeet · 14/12/2013 09:58

Don't quit.

You have the chance of getting a good reference for future jobs. If you're going through an agency you'll want them to be given good feedback. Not completing an assignment isn't good.

If the company often use temporary workers you might be asked back, even if it's not straight after Christmas. It would be better for them to see your name come up as a potential temp and for them to think "yes, she was good and reliable".

I temped at one place for nearly 2 years, I'd go in for several weeks, then have a few weeks off, then go back for a month, then take a few weeks off. That work pattern really suite me at the time. I became the first person on their list to call up. Now I work full time in a different department. I got lucky but if your quit it'll never happen.

samandi · 14/12/2013 09:58

Another one who doesn't understand why you'd quit.

It's absolutely fine to quit a temporary job for a better opportunity, which is what I thought this thread would be about.

But temporary jobs often say they might be extended with no guarantee.

Also I guess you've missed the payday deadline for Christmas - often earlier than other months so this sounds fairly standard. Should've been explained probably.

LucyLasticKnickers · 14/12/2013 10:01

it woudl b enice to get paid in january dont forget.

it is up to you of course, but a temporary job is a temporary jobs.

RandomMess · 14/12/2013 10:03

If you've worked hard and made a good impression then hopefully they will give you a great reference. Ask them if they've been pleased with your work and ask them if they'd be happy to give a reference for you in the future and what sort of reference they've give - some just confirm the dates and that's about it.

Iamsparklyknickers · 14/12/2013 10:05

So if you quit now you'll get less cash in January? Only you know if you can afford that.

It's shit to have a leaner christmas than you were planning for, but it's not the end of the world and you can still make it a happy one.

I don't think you should quit without something else lined up to be honest, but now you know where you stand, don't go above and beyond your job description or be doing favours and concentrate on looking for something else for when your contract finishes.

If something better comes along I would have no problem with giving a weeks notice and leaving - but be aware that some shittier companies can really drag out sorting out the money they owe you when you don't leave on their terms.

Jinsei · 14/12/2013 10:05

Well, at least the manager is being honest and not just stringing you along. There was never any guarantee of you getting something permanent, so it's not like any promises have been broken. Not sure why you feel hard done by.

Quit if you want to, by all means. I guess it depends on whether you need the money and how easy it will be for you to find another job.

willowash · 14/12/2013 10:13

Your all right im not going to quit, just a bit miffed as he told me i would be offered a job. Your right in saying it will be a good reference. But i feel a bit misled in thinking there would be a job after im a single parent and come off benefits so i was obviously really happy to get it. He told me yesterday that he had put the hours through for wages but only included my 2 days even though i had worked more. Just worried now about what happens after it ends, i have applied for 6 more jobs last night so hope i get an interview. Thanks everyone for talking some sense

i had a temporary job for 3 years, lost it earlier this year. so there is hope

Iamsparklyknickers · 14/12/2013 10:21

What date did you start?

I know the payroll at my place is put through by my manager about 10 working days before I actually get my wages, so overtime or any other extras wouldn't show up after that cut off point.

It's shit when you're starting but happens all over. The smaller the company the smaller the time difference. Just make sure that your January pay packet is complete.

whereiseveryone · 14/12/2013 10:27

Business is hard nosed and you need to be too especially in a temp position.

They didn't offer you any guarantees so keep at it but maybe give a bit more thought to what works for you (in terms of hours you are prepared to work). Then, keep on looking for another (permanent) job. Stay on good terms and give adequate notice when you tell them you are leaving.

It pains but suck it up. It's just all one big game really...

willowash · 14/12/2013 10:27

I started on the 5th i understand about the pay thing now. Hopefully i can find something else before this 1 ends.
