To think that most Christmas cards are meaningless

The first Christmas after my son died, we received a few thoughtful cards from people who acknowledged our loss and that Christmas would naturally be a difficult time, and some that mentioned his name. However, most people failed to say anything at all apart from 'Happy Christmas', (yeah, right), love from XXXX and they made no mention of our son, as if he never existed. This year, more of the same. It has made me think about the pointlessness of Christmas cards that say nothing. I like it when people write notes, I even like Round Robins because they show a bit of effort and attempt to communicate something. But otherwise, why bother?

YANBU I haven't sent out Christmas card since school. I don't like getting them either as they make the house look untidy and my mother seems to be on a life mission to find the biggest, tackiest looking Christmas cards in the world.

Sorry you lost your son. We lost our son as a newborn last November - I know what you mean about no one mentioning it as last christmas I noticed it as well- but then I suppose people don't know what to say. I actually prefer it when people do mention him, makes it feel as if he is not forgotten.

I don't send many Christmas cards as I have always felt they are meaningless, especially when there is no message just to... From...

You're so RIGHT. It irritates me when you get a card that's not even addressed (so no "dear bob" inside) literally they just scrawl their name at the bottom

They've clearly gone thru a stack of cards signin them all and then just picked one at random, popped it in an envelope and posted it to you. No thought, it's just a chore to them.

I hate Xmas cards I'd ban them :)

YANBU I'm not sending any this year apart from my immediate family, it's just something silly now, sending cards to people because you have to.
Sorry about your son, I hope you have a relaxing Christmas full of lovely memories

People give them to me at work, but I just put them in the recycle unopened. I can't be bothered with them and it's silly to give them to people you see every day.

Most Christmas traditions are brilliant, don't cause us much hassle and bring us joy. Christmas cards, however, are not.

They just seem so pointless. Especially the generic ones. They will die out in the next 20 years or so I think. Nobody really handwrites letters anymore so cards will follow suit and it will more than likely just be ecards.
