To think that people who work in finance should be able to do basic sums?

I did overtime last month ( as I do every month) and I therefore fill out a time sheet. My time sheet didn't go through this month because I forgot to tally up the number of hours worked. You might think this sounds fair however on the form there is a clear list of the hours worked.
I can't help but feel that the lady who collects the form could have quickly added up the figures and then written in the box for me. It would have taken 5 seconds.
Instead it gets returned to me (late) and I get snapped at. If I was working in finance and someone has forgotten to put the total number of hours worked then I would have done it for them rather than inducing some kind of burocratic drama. The woman in finance doesn't talk to me nicely.

I used to work in finance. The girl opposite me (by her own admission) didn't know how to do percentages. I despaired. I'd have just totted it up and written it in if it had been me, too. How petty and what a waste of time and energy to give it back.

Smoorikins · 12/12/2013 23:25

Well, if the person doing the payroll is doing her job properly, she'd be adding up the numbers anyway, to check the employees totals. Regardless of whether the employee had done it or not.

YANBU.

rockybalboa · 12/12/2013 23:28

YABU. Who says the lady couldn't add it up? Your post just says she didn't add it up. You were supposed to do it. Fill the form in properly if you want to get paid properly.

Groovee · 12/12/2013 23:29

YANBU. We had a mum who claimed she was an accountant but used a calculator at the tea/coffees stall at sports day. It was easy Tea, Coffee £1, juice 50p scone 50p.

I worked in greggs as a teenager and we had to add up in our heads!

BillyBanter · 12/12/2013 23:34

Your OP bears no relation whatsoever to your title. I think you should be able to do that.

There is no reason to believe that she can't do simple sums. Either she is a jobsworth, was in a bad mood, is a bit twatty to everyone, or is being a twat to you.

I was rubbish at maths at school but somehow I've ended up in a job in finance. I don't send things back to people because they forgot to put in a total though. I just total it up for them.

using a calculator.

I was in a travel agents today, changing some money into nz dollars for presents. I wanted three lots of £15 worth (i.e. £45 worth). The lovely, helpful, smart and professional young girl behind the counter said, "three fifteens, um, I can't do that in my head" and reached for a calculator. Now I am no maths genius, but to me that is an easy sum!

Op, I think your accounts person was being lazy and petty. Even if she couldn't do the sum on paper or in her head, she could have used a calculator to work it out for you.

Good to know that I'm not being a weirdo then. This woman is always particularly rude and snide to me... honestly they are dreadful in that department.
Once I went in with a form and no one would take it and Boone would tell me who to give it to even though thy knew. How odd!

No one...I'm not exactly sure what I've done to this woman but it seems she hates me!

superstarheartbreaker · 13/12/2013 03:52

What is worse is that the sum was ridiculously easy.

I think Smoorikins makes a fair point. If you had totaled the hours and come up with 700, would she have taken it on faith and paid you for 700 hours? She should be totaling them herself regardless. If she DID total them herself, but didn't pay you because you didn't total them on the time sheet, that's pretty douche-y in my opinion.

superstarheartbreaker · 13/12/2013 04:02

Yes...douchebag springs to mind. Good job I don' t have to deal with this shit any more as I have a fab new job starting in January. Excuse the stealth boast! Thing is, I don't know if I should complain to my boss...it's so annoying.

It depends how many time sheets she is receiving. She might get loads not filled in correctly and had enough of it as it might eat into her day. Also you could think she hasn't done it properly and expected more hours and then she has to investigate etc, so much easier if you already know what to expect.

However there are ways of doing things! I think she was being difficult but without knowing if she has been told to return them etc. also, if you don't get on, she is unlikely to help you.

I would go and see her and apologise as she isn't going anywhere and neither are you! Try to build a relationship before it gets out of hand.

Serenitysutton · 13/12/2013 04:40

Accountants don't spend their days adding things up. Do you think any employer would pay that sort of salary so they could do something any excel spreadsheet or calculator could do?
The fact the woman is in finance isn't really relevant, she sounds like a job worth . Anyone can add up, you don't need to be a finance specialist.

DeckTheHallsWithBoughsOfHorry · 13/12/2013 07:46

Someone I know who worked in our finance department didn't understand the difference between 2.4 and 2.04. This came to light when she was given the job of putting the currency conversion rates into the system.
