Sorry pressed create by accident
Dh bought me this watc anyway and it was £90, the battery ran out a few days ago so took it to timpson to get the battery changed.
The one man appeared to be quite new and the other man was directing him as they had as few customers
First man couldn't get back off so more experiencedan had a go and succeeded eventually and changed battery.
I've just gone to set the right time on it and they've scarred it quite badly on the side where they used tools to get back off
I'm gutted as I love this watch but what do I do with regards to complaining, WIBU to ask for the value of the watch?
Please be kind, first AIBU Smile

YABU

Whilst annoying, no one will see the scratches except you as it is on the reverse side of the watch. And I'm guessing you paid no more than a fiver for your battery. You could, of course, have sent it back to the manufacturer, but seeing as batteries are not covered under guarantee, would have cost a whole lot more than what you paid at Timpsons.

So while the scratches are annoying, unfortunately it's one of the risks you take and the reason why the battery cover is on the reverse of the watch.

DuckworthLewis · 12/12/2013 15:23

The battery should have lasted longer than 4 months though!

Why didn't you contact the shop you bought it from?

DuckworthLewis · 12/12/2013 15:24

Bobber The law states that any repair must be carried out using due 'skill, care and diligence', so I am afraid you are mistaken that it is just one of those risks that you take.

Sunshineonsea · 12/12/2013 16:04

It cost £11.95 (came with a lifetime guarantee)
The watch was bought from a designer outlet that is some way from where I live
Tbh I wouldn't have minded paying a little more but I used timpson for the convenience and because I've never had any problems with them before
The scratches are not noticeable whilst the watch is on my wrist, however the actual back was flush to the watch and you can now see a small gap where they've forced the tool to get the back off, the watch is a rose gold colour but where they have scratched it the (silver colour) metal is now visible
I know £90 is a lot for them to give to me and I know it's only visible if you take the watch off or look from the side but I expected them to take a little more care

I didn't contact the shop about the battery as I just assumed that the watch had probably been on show for a while and that's why the battery gave out so fast

I would complain !

Juliaparker25 · 12/12/2013 17:21

They have used the wrong tools .........Getting the backs off watches is easy if you have the right tools. Take it back and tell them they have buggered it (Technical Term),also batteries cost next to nothing (Check Ebay) replacing watch batteries is one of the last great rip off,s

CoffeeTea103 · 12/12/2013 17:25

Yanbu, whilst no one will see the back of the watch why should you accept something that was damaged? They shouldn't provide that service then.

Sunshineonsea · 12/12/2013 19:36

I'm definitely going to complain but what do you think they should offer/I should demand?
Because although they've buggered it it still does work so I'm a bit confused with where to go from here
What would you do?

Breadkneadslove · 12/12/2013 19:48

I would take it back to them explain how you feel about what's happened that you didn't look carefully at it when you received it back from as you didn't expect it to be damaged. Ask them what they feel is suitable recompense, see what they suggest first but I would be happy to have the cost of the battery change refunded £11.95 with the guarantee still valid for the year.

mrscumberbatch · 12/12/2013 20:05

Hiya, I change watch batteries as part of my job.

The scratch, I would chalk up to being irritating but not complain about...

The fact that the back is not sitting flush with the case anymore isn't really acceptable. If the back wasn't coming off with a knife or the clampy thing (scientific name) then they should have either declined to do the job or said to you 'We can carry on, but it's at your own risk'.

Unfortunately, it's not damage worthwhile of replacing the watch. (Unless it was a waterproof watch and has now been compromised) But I would have refused to pay for the battery on principle at the time.

And £11.95 for a battery is extortion.
