cold house

We are due to stay at my brothers on Boxing day. He lives in an old farmhouse with stone floors, heating comes on morning/evening but seems to lose heat rapidly.

We stayed recently but felt v cold overnight & in the afternoon.

WWBU to mention to brother, he's obviously used to it but our place is tropical in comparison!

Take extra duvet ? Wear thermals? Offer to pay for extra oil/ gas useage?

I wouldn't walk into the house of a friend or family member and start complaining about the cold. Wear thick socks, base layer or thick sweater. You could even take a blanket for the bed.

We live in an old stone house, and it is cold...but we can't afford to run the heating any more than we do - couple of hours in the morning, and a three hours at night.

We combat it by layering warm clothes the rest of the time.

Thanks for advice :) My thought was maybe we would be rude to mention so I guess the extra layers is the solution.

Bedding already provided by bro & more than adequate so long as you keep all limbs under it!

Right, I have Serbian relatives with freezing mountain retreats. Sleep in long pyjamas with thermals under, socks (most important!) and a light jumper. I also wear a hat in bed.

In the daytime, layers, layers and more layers. Cosy slippers are quite nice if it is a shoes-off house.

Primark have some excellent and inexpensive thermals which are very thin so fit easily under most clothes. I have even worn tights over them, for example.

Our house can be very cold, every bed in the house has an electric blanket, guests love them. Could you take an electric blanket with you?

MrsEdinburgh · 11/12/2013 20:57

Sounds exactly like my BILs house, except when BIL says he's cold at ours we do turn the heating up/on!

He's not struggling for money but chooses to spend it on other things, which is entirely his prerogative.

Mind you he waxes lyrical about his aga & thinks we should all get one installed.........conveniently forgetting that he occasionally complains about it too.

Ours is the cold house in this scenario.
I know my SiL really struggles when she comes here, and I don't want her to feel uncomfortable or avoid us for the rest of her life, so I always ask her to come and tell her I'll leave the heating on all the time. Equally though, she comes prepared with warm layers of clothes. It's just what you do - try your best to accommodate the other person. It's only a couple of nights once a year, and we just turn the radiators down in all our rooms to combat being over heated by it although it does mean we are cold when we get up in the morning instead of the heating coming on an hour before we get up.
