to feel more than a bit pathetic...

...because I can't cope with my painful periods?

I had the copper coil put in, in late August. The first period was bad but the last two I've had have been simply horrific. I can barely stand up straight because my tummy hurts so much (all the way up from lower tummy to just below my ribs). I was awake half the night crying with agony despite having taken mefenamic acid and co-codamol.

I feel trapped as this was my last resort contraception wise. The pill gives me migraines and makes me psychotic, the mini pill and mirena coil make me psychotic along with a whole host of other symptoms.

Just feeling really sorry for myself and don't know what to do. Got a gp appointment booked for next week but don't even know what I expect them to say.

Coil had similar effects for me. Contraceptive injection?

OHforDUCKSchristmasCake · 11/12/2013 18:30

Its not patheticness.

Ive had period pains so bad that Ive likened them to the very end of labour, the only reason why the air wasnt blue and begging for an epidural is simply because the surface area of pain was much smaller when its period pain. I had the same delrious feeling you do when you release endorphins during contractions.

Period pain can be horrendous. Im afraid I cant offer advice but I can tell you on no uncertain terms that you are not pathetic.

OHforDUCKSchristmasCake · 11/12/2013 18:32

Also, wrt to contraception Im in exactly the same boat as you for every single reason you described.

The only reason its not an issue now is because im single.

Soon as I hit 40 Im getting those bad boys clipped.

bluecheeseforbreakfast · 11/12/2013 18:38

You are not pathetic.

My periods are more painful than ds's birth. I would prefere to give birth every month than have periods, at least contractions come in waves and you get gas and air to take your mind off it all.

What about condoms?

Needadviceandfast · 11/12/2013 20:40

I can't compare this to childbirth as I've only ever had a CS but how I felt earlier, I would imagine is similar to giving birth. The worst seems to have passed for now thank god, only got through it with labour style breathing/panting and ibuprofen.

Thanks for the support - sorry you've all suffered too but I'm glad it's not just me. No one I know personally (or well enough to have discussed such things) suffers like this and I feel like they think I'm overreacting when I describe how bad it is.

Definitely going to get this taken out, I can't handle even the possibility of another month like this. Worried about the injection for similar reasons to the pill, so guess condoms are on the cards. Need to see if DP will consider the snip...

I've been in this exact position today! In absolute crippling agony and in tears, couldn't get out of bed for most of the morning. conversely the pill actually cures the issue for me, but off it as Ttc. luckily it is usually only a few hours on the first day

WaffilyVersatile · 11/12/2013 21:43

CERAZETTE!!

If you haven't already tried then please do, I used to have crippling bad pains along with incredibly heavy periods but a month into taking this pill they cleared it right up :)

OHforDUCKSchristmasCake · 11/12/2013 22:17

OP Ive breathed through period pain too and had the natural reaction to push. Its your body expelling nasties and a natural reaction. Its awful and I really feel for you.

Needadviceandfast · 11/12/2013 22:34

Thank you Oh! Off to bed now and hoping not to be woken up by 'false labour' !

Rosencrantz · 11/12/2013 22:37

Same happened to me.

I am now taking the mini pill and have no periods. It is glorious.

You are not a wimp. You do not have to allow your own body to cripple you ever month. There are other ways!

Rosencrantz · 11/12/2013 22:37

X post!

Cerazette is the mini pill I am taking. Stopping my periods is the best thing I've ever done.

Sparrowlegs248 · 11/12/2013 22:40

Depo jab? I had horrendous periods precontraception. Then a pill i got on well with, til it was taken out of use. Then a series of pills that made me bleed for about 16 out of 28 days.....

Then the depo jab. FABULOUS!! Injection every 12 weeks. No periods, no pain, no mood swings, no misery.

I'm off it now after 7 yrs (ttc) and the god damned periods are back. Currently in bed with a hot water bottle across my hips and lower belly and dosed up on super strength ibuprofen.

MrsMook · 11/12/2013 22:42

I'd rather go through DS2's back to back labour again than some of the periods I've had. At least that was only 5 hours of the stronger contractions, not 36 hrs (which actually makes them quite a close runner up to DS1's labour where he was well and truely stuck)

Cerazette and the implant have calmed them for me. I don't know about how the hormones might play you up. They have a similar combination.

So yes, period pain does hurt as much as pushing out 8+lb of baby at a bad angle, so not pathetic. There's consolation Grin

sykadelic15 · 12/12/2013 01:39

I have an Implanon rod. It's the shot but in rod form and lasts 3 years. I am on my second one. No mood swings, no periods in 4 years (i did have a bit of cramping after switching to the new one and remembered how thankful I am not to have period pain anymore) BUT I have gained a bit of weight so that's a negative.

If the mefenamic acid wasn't working for you... wow. That stuff is the only kind of pain meds that work for period pain for me. You poor thing!

I also will never get a copper coil 'cause mum did and it grew over and had to be surgically removed. Figured it was better to assume it would happen to me too and be safe rather than sorry!
