to think that deeming a size 12 to be "LARGE" is rather insulting?

Was looking at dresses for DH to buy me for xmas. Found one I liked, chose my size: "UK Size 12 - LARGE". And just thought, 'Well, fuck you, then!'

Size 12 is not large, fashion-twats. Could they not just have put 'size 12'? Did they HAVE to add the extra shame?

Perhaps I am more sensitive about this than most as I was anorexic. I finally started eating normally & put on more weight than I had lost. I completely lost my confidence even to go out, see friends, attend college etc. It took YEARS to rebuild it.

And then you see this bullshit.

Also, for people talking about vintage clothes sizing - there used to be a split in women's clothes, Misses and Women's (also they did "half sizes" for short ladies which always makes me think of hobbits!)

Misses was for the more willowy, less developed teen figure and Women's was for the busty, hippy women-shaped figures.

It used to be a thing of pride for girls to eventually fit into the Women's sizes, it showed you'd matured. But as the fashion moved towards looking like a 16 year old girl, they got rid of the Women's sizes entirely and made everything Misses sizes, completely ignoring the fact that women rarely stay that shape.

And that's your fashion history lesson for the day Grin

if youre seeing clothes sizing as either being complimentary or insulting, then its you thats got the problem.

Large doesnt mean bad.

The clothes label doesnt say "you fat bastard" on it. It says its large. Im assuming this is relative to the other sizes it comes in.

The number or letter on your clothes label is purely to assist you in finding what fits. Not a value judgement

I had some sympathy this morning.

I went on a spa visit.

The attendant studied me then went and brought me a size XXL robe.

And this is a unisex spa.

I am 5 ft 8 and a size 14/16

specialsubject · 12/12/2013 13:15

label in your knickers never a subject of shame, or of any interest really.

forget and move on. Everyone in the fashion 'industry' is an idiot by definition, not worthy of any brain time.

MisguidedHamwidge · 12/12/2013 13:17

I think it depends on the brand. Some brands don't go above a 12 because they don't want bigger people wearing their clothes (My friend told me this when she was working as a rep. for a brand that targets young, sporty types).

ProfondoRosso · 12/12/2013 14:57

Fanjo, don't feel bad. As a fellow tall woman, I get the same. I think on these occasions, they do often judge on height. And a big fluffy XXL robe is much more roomy and decadent than a little knee-length one! I hope you enjoyed your spa.

I love this, special subject Grin
The label in my knickers does say Primark, though. Blush

I always thought a 8-10 was small, 12-14 was medium and 14-16 was large and so on. Thats how i grew up with them anyway.

For a truly lovely time op i suggest you visit a new look store near to me, recently went in to ask where i could find a certain coat that was in the window, the young girl (who couldnt have been anymore than 20) pointed towards the wall but said to me what size did i want as they didnt have larger sizes in, i said a size 12, she says, oh yeah sorry were all out of the larger sizes.

Felt like id just asked if they had it in size 40! so i just walked out without even looking around for anything else!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/12/2013 15:34

Thanks profondo. I loved it..planning next visit already! :)

ErrolTheDragon · 12/12/2013 15:49

I was xmas shopping today, H&M had a sign up saying 'improved sizing' - it was the same bands as I said upthread. Smile

Weegiemum · 12/12/2013 15:52

If I was a 12 it certainly wouldn't make it large. I'm an 18-20. Thats large!

FyreFly · 12/12/2013 16:03

I can't honestly say I give a damn about what numbers or letters are on the labels - I only use them as a very rough guide to look in the right area because every single shop seems to have its own concept of standard measurement. If I fits, I sits buys it :)

BlingBang · 12/12/2013 16:12

I went into an underwear shop, picked up a pair of knickers and asked the assistant if she had them in my size only to be told, "Ma'am, we have nothing in your size". It was in Asia though where I was looked on as obese as a UK size 12. Did make me laugh.

boodles · 12/12/2013 16:37

Who gives a shit what size it says on your clothes. Since when has a size been an insult? Forget it and move on. Life is to short to wonder if a shop is insulting you based on a number.

vladthedisorganised · 12/12/2013 16:59

Calliani I had the same sort of experience in the USA, but over height (I'm 5'2").

Tried on a pair of 'small' trousers which fell straight to the floor in folds of extra fabric, and asked for something a bit smaller.
Same happened with XS and XXS. Was eventually steered towards the children's section.
By the time I'd found age 9-size jeans without a cartoon logo I was planning a trip to the far east, not to mention giving up any idea of teaching 10-year olds who would tower over me.

Agree with you on TopShop too. I tried on a jacket there and it completely flattened my bosom (32B, not exactly Lolo Ferrari)

brettgirl2 · 12/12/2013 20:10

It never ceases to amaze me how big some women are who claim to be a 12. All this size thing is bollocks, if it fits then wear it. If you think you are the correct weight happy days. The sizes are completely different in different shops get a life!!!!

LimitedEditionLady · 12/12/2013 20:35

That sounded catty brettgirl. How big?who are these people you refer to?

ShirakawaKaede · 12/12/2013 23:22

Would have to agree there, it did come across as catty. Bear in mind that I did say I was probably more bothered by this stuff than I should be - and why. Feel free to utterly disagree with me and tell me that I'm seeing judgement where perhaps there is none, but please don't be rude.

We all walk out of shops with exactly the same body we walked in with

Seeing 'small, medium, large' on a label doesn't change that fact.

Therefore I wouldn't pay it any more thought OP Smile
