Does anyone here know anything about this?

Basically I can't load a web page via internet explorer on windows 8 for some reason, it keeps saying 'page cannot be displayed'.

But I can view the same page on the desktop...

Oh, and internet keeps disconnecting for some reason.

I am not highly computer literate and have no clue why this is happening... we used to be able to connect to the internet by clicking the 'start' icon, then clicking 'Internet Explorer'.

Now it is all 'Computer say no' with no blooming explanantion!

Can any computer knowledgeable MNer help please?

I have now got a prompt on my opening screen [where you put your password] telling me about a 'Windows Update' and to 'Restart computer to finish updating' and something about this also happening at some point automatically...

Confused

Could this be the issue, is Windows 8.1 not installed correctly or something?

I sometimes have problems with IE and I am not on the dreaded windows 8, it regularly tells me that I cannot load web pages or its not connected when clearly it is, infact its one huge pain in the ass, when it plays up I just switch over to Google chrome (not as a preference but because its on my laptop). After many hours of googling and attempting the suggested fixes I have given up, I use it till it screws up and then switch, it always resolves itself eventually.

IE is a bag of shite!!!

Binky, how do you switch browser... do you just download [or upload?] it?

I would let it restart, may sort out the problem. Anyway the update needs to complete, even if it's unrelated.

Just search on the internet for which ever browser you fancy trying, Google chrome Is okay for a back up but, for me, its lacking. Mozilla Firefox is pretty good.

I've just searched Google chrome and the first link is a free download, do what is says to download it, once completed you will have an icon somewhere on your desktop, click and go. (same for firefox)

Just make sure that you download the right one for which ever windows you're running.

If you are downloading chrome or firefox -be careful where you get them from! - used to recommend cnet downloads but recently had problems with them trying to add other rubbish to my computer...maybe go to Mozilla firefox page directly...
I use thunderbird too - puts all your web based email (outlook/hotmail and Gmail) onto your computer - eventually the plan is to delete from web based every couple of weeks and keep on (backed up) hard drive (you can't have them sync'd then though!) - did this after someone tried to hack into my hotmail and realised how much info there is in my old emails...
First jobs I do with a new computer - download and instal firefox and then Avast free antivirus, then Libre/Open office...

Same here unlucky83. Download Firefox, Avast, then get various Add-ons for Firefox, namely AdBlock Plus, Flashblock, NoScript, HTTPS Everywhere and Ghostery. Then CCleaner. All are available from Mozilla, except CCleaner which can be safely downloaded from FileHippo.
