...given parents more than 4 days notice to provide a costume for 'dress up as a Roman' day? Especially as it is so close to Christmas and we've already been asked to provide costumes/outfits for nativity productions!

Ds came out with the note on Friday (handed to him on the gate by the teacher so I know he hasn't delayed giving it to me) We had a very busy Weekend planned with various other Christmas related events and my older DS had a test relating to his secondary school application. I work Monday and Tuesday so have been spending the evening so far trying to juggle finishing work that needs to be done by tomorrow with supervising Ds cutting out and painting bits of cardboard and trying to find various bits of dressing up stuff to cobble together a costume (lucky we just moved house so have plenty of cardboard boxes lying around)

Do you think Mmmm?

My two never wanted to dress up for that sort of thing-I think it depends on the child. Can't see DS2 cycling to school dressed as a Roman somehow. Grin

NoComet · 10/12/2013 22:16

we don't have any plain unfitted sheets.

I m not joking no notice means either elastic in funny places or a senator hovered in glow in the dark aliens

DD1 loves history and wanted to do it properly, DD2 embarrass easily and would be mortified going in too naff a costume.

I hate this sort of crap. Unless it's something very easy or a fancy dress outfit he already has (like a pirate) I don't bother. Victorian day is my personal bug bear. It would require me buying a whole new outfit. No way. Luckily ds isn't into fancy dress so gives it a miss. He's also at after school club nearly every day, so spends 8 hrs in whatever he's wearing, it has to be practical, comfortable and warm.

covered

BlackeyedShepherdswatchsheep · 10/12/2013 22:16

we got 4 and a half days notice of a weekend event that they were expected to attend, before christmas.

the children were also punished if the parents forgot their coathanger for the school play. the children are 5 and 6. we onlyy got one chance to remember!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 10/12/2013 22:39

MmmmWhitewine they could do a four day reminder. But when they publish the school newsletter with "dates for your diary" why not include "dress up like a Roman day for year 3" in the list so that people can get organised with their bedding?

MmmmWhiteWine · 10/12/2013 22:40

If the kids don't want to participate that's fair enough but if its just cause the parents can't be arsed I think that's a shame. And I do think schools are damned if they do and damned if they don't....they can never please everyone.

FloozeyLoozey · 10/12/2013 22:45

Mmmwhitewine, it's to do with cost and available materials. I never have any of the things people suggest here, like spare white sheets or material or old clothes. I'm not stockpiling mountains of craps and buying new material or outfits ds wouldn't ordinarily want, just for school.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 10/12/2013 22:45

The parents can be arsed in many cases, just need a bit longer to sort stuff if they are unable to get to the shops during the week.

If I'd had longer to organise the school play costume I could have ordered something relevant online, as it was I didn't have time.

RooRooTaToot · 10/12/2013 23:42

Use a t-shirt (any colour) of Mum or Dad's (inside out if logoed), with a belt around the middle. Black trousers/jogging bottoms underneath. Done. Ok, not the most authentic, but looks as though an effort has been made.

NoComet · 11/12/2013 00:19

Not only can I be arsed, I quite like planning and making things, but I repeat, we are a fair way from any shops.

I don't mind spending a bit of money on dress up bits.

I do resent having to make a special 26 mile round trip and shell out £5, when I was in town the day before.

With extra curricular stuff and my own shopping most things can be tucked in with no extra petrol and very little extra time, if I get a week to two weeks notice!

NoComet · 11/12/2013 00:19

£5 to park

silverten · 11/12/2013 15:52

I agree bunny. I'm looking forward to doing a bit of fancy dress but if the summons arrives the days I'm working then it simply isn't happening- or, at best, I'll be cobbling something together at midnight whilst DD sleeps- so she'll miss out on any 'fun' to be had there...
