Ebay - Collection of Item

Sauu9123 · 09/12/2013 20:22

I won an item of furniture on Ebay. The item is collection only and on the other side of the country. I proposed to the seller that I would collect it from them when I was next in the area where the item is located, which is in two weeks' time.

The seller is putting a lot of pressure on my to collect the item earlier but I want to stick to my guns. AIBU?

Reverse? Surely "you" would have contacted the seller with your collection idea before you won the item.
They aren't a warehouse and want the item gone.
"You" abu

CSIJanner · 09/12/2013 20:25

Did you check with the seller about the timescales for collection before you bid and won? If the answer is no, YABU. They've sold and now you want to use them as storage without prior agreement. They probably need the room or need to move the item ASAP.

If however you did contact them before and warned them, then ignore the above as YANBU.

Tobagostreet · 09/12/2013 20:26

Have you offered to pay for storage of said item for 2 weeks? If so, YANBU.

If not... Well you know the answer.

DontCallMeDaughter · 09/12/2013 20:26

A little bit, yes. I'd be pretty annoyed to have it hanging around for 2 weeks after the auction ended. They might be paying for storage, or moving soon or anything really.

But if they needed it gone soon, they should have put that requirement in the description, but really you should have checked before bidding if you knew it would be that long....

Nothing much that can be done about it now though. Just be really nice and apologetic and hopefully they'll come around.

bundaberg · 09/12/2013 20:28

2 weeks is quite a long time when you just want stuff out of the way. you should probably have mentioned it before bidding

TidyDancer · 09/12/2013 20:28

Did you say before or after the auction ended that you wouldn't want to collect for a while? And how clear were you on how long it would be?

YABVVVVU without checking first if this is ok.

Firstly there is the space issue but secondly unless they are bonkers the buyer will only accept cash on collection otherwise they would leave them selves open to potential fraud.

So if they need the money for say Xmas presents they will be a bit stuck!

CrohnicallySick · 09/12/2013 21:02

And don't forget, if you let them down for whatever reason, they then are unlikely to get a second chance offer accepted, so will have to file an unpaid item case (or whatever you have to do to get your fees back) and relist

Aquariusgirl86 · 09/12/2013 21:16

When I've wanted something gone quick ( like when moving house and things) I've always said "needs collecting within. 5/7 days" they should have been clear but you should have checked. So IMO ya -both- bu to be getting annoyed!

TiaMariaandSpringCleaning · 09/12/2013 21:25

I'm assuming this is a reverse AIBU. Unless there's prior agreement or the item is tiny (and therefore not going to take up any space for the seller) then it is unreasonable to expect them to store it for two weeks. Even if it's tiny and you want to pay on collection that's quite unfair to the seller

Iamsparklyknickers · 09/12/2013 21:29

Yabu.

Ebay means to me and most people Item sold>gone>cash.

It could be they need to room, it could be they need the money. I would never bid on something expecting anything other than a very swift exchange without contacting to ask them first. I'm pretty certain it's grounds for them to terminate the sale with you and offer it to the next highest bidder actually.

nauticant · 09/12/2013 21:38

It's this kind of thing that means I give a straight refusal when anyone makes a collect-in-person request.

jacks365 · 09/12/2013 21:41

Yabincrediblyu. 2 weeks today is Christmas eve apart from anything else.

jacks365 · 09/12/2013 21:42

Sorry 2 weeks tomorrow is Christmas eve.

Mia4 · 09/12/2013 21:58

YANBU if you agreed this prior to buying OP. YABVVU if you didn't and were just presumptuous. In the latter case, if I was the seller I would relist the item or offer to last bidder.

greenfolder · 09/12/2013 22:10

yabu if this is not what was agreed. i have bid on furniture in a different part of the country but always checked with the seller before bidding. If it is somewhere you have friends/family can they not go and collect now for you?
