To just give a 'token' present to a 5 year old this Xmas so I can get him a super one in the sales?

I was going to get DGS1 a scalextric set for £69 from amazon but before I could order it they sold all but one out and increased the price by £50!!!

He will love this toy but I can't afford nearly £120 for one present.

He's got lots of other presents from everyone on the day and I have bought a puzzle Blush

I'm hoping the deal will come back on after Xmas so I can get it then. His birthdays not til September so can't use that excuse!

Do you think it's ok or is Christmas all about the big day?

I think it's ok if he's not expecting it, or for Santa to bring it. However:

What would you say to him? That the big present was coming or have it as a surprise?

What would you do if the scalextric wasn't in the sales and you were left having given him a puzzle?

bundaberg · 09/12/2013 12:08

i think it's ok if he'll have plenty of other stuff yes. but what will you do if you can't get it in the sales?

BrokenFairylights · 09/12/2013 12:57

I think that if you don't get him the present you should get something else, I'd feel sad to just buy a puzzle for my ds. The idea is that's it's a Christmas present not a new year present and either Santa is bringing it or he isn't. If you can't afford it get something you can afford.

sneezecakesmum · 09/12/2013 13:52

I can afford £70 but not £120. If the one i want isn't available there are other sets at £80. Just wanted a particular one. I will tell him Santa hid it in the shed. Or maybe not. Lol. Think i will say nothing and just give him it when i get it. I don't suppose at five the inconsistencies will matter when there is a shiny new scalextric ??.

if it is the star wars one it is on sale at argos for £29.99

hope that is helpful

if not i do not think it matter he will have too much stuff to notice and once january comes round he will be bored of his new toys

BigGapMum · 09/12/2013 13:58

Could you not get it for a decent price elsewhere? Amazon doesn't always have the best prices. I haven't used them much this Christmas as nearly everything I've bought I've found cheaper on other websites.

LEMisafucker · 09/12/2013 14:00

£120 is a lot for one toy if you are on a budget. Is it something HE desperately wants? only you keep saying YOU want that specific one? Probably because you want him to have the best and that is understandable but in all honesty i would rather buy something else if it were me. Argos do some amazing deals, also try Tesco Direct - do you have clubcard points? they are doing double points just now so effectively half price. They have a good range - just got DD a furby on points, so chuffed. I bought DD (and DP!) a scaletrix a few years back, it is fun but it is now mostly in its box, takes longer to set up than what they spend playing on it so unless its a real "must have" for him, i would think of other things - you can get scaletrix for cheaper?

LEMisafucker · 09/12/2013 14:02

oh and absolutely - look elsewhere - I nearly got the furby on amazon because argos had run out. Amazon was £65.99 Shock Tesco Direct £39.99!!! usual price £49.99 so do be wary of amazon prices.

sneezecakesmum · 09/12/2013 19:03

Thanks for the ideas, but sadly no club card and I've googled everywhere for this particular scalextric. It just got excellent reviews and can be speed controlled so the cars don't fly off the track all the time which is frustrating for the younger kids. Not all the sets can do this.

It's sold out everywhere Sad

I think you are right and by January or even February he will be bored with all the Xmas toys and this will be a nice surprise. He'll have plenty of others on the day.

Btw. Have checked the price everywhere too and amazon was the cheapest.

I'd assume he's too young to grasp it and will be disappointed, but delighted when the penny drops.

I'd be sure he has a few other things to open.

MoreThanChristmasCrackers · 09/12/2013 19:08

OP, maybe a good idea to check with the parents first to collaborate stories. Grin
otherwise we could see your story in AIBU.
Hope you find it in the sale.

pigletmania · 09/12/2013 19:10

Totally fine. I would explain to the parents the situation

Crowler · 09/12/2013 19:11

Oh, godson. Got it. That's a lovely gift OP, he's a lucky boy!

SaucyJack · 09/12/2013 19:14

I don't think it's an OK thing to do for a five year old who hasn't chosen either that particular present or to wait either. Christmas presents are for Christmas. Specially as you have no way of knowing whether it will be on sale at a price you want to pay for it after Christmas either.

SaucyJack · 09/12/2013 19:15

Ah, ignore. godson- not your son.

sneezecakesmum · 09/12/2013 19:23

Xmas Grin AIBU to be furious at DSs GM for giving DS a crappy puzzle for Christmas so that she can save money in the January sales

Haha! I can give him a bunch of presents he'll get bored with or something he will love (Grand Prix fan!) just a bit later. It'll be back in stock at some point I'm sure.
