To think you can't just change the rota like that

I've just had the riot act read to me because I have come in on a shift that was on a the rota when it was first published, it's a 6 week rota given out 2 weeks in advance to allow people to make plans and get childcare in place etc.

The woman who makes the rota decided to move my shift to a later one and not tell me 'because x needs to be on earlies this week' no reason for it, no prior warning, just slung me on the late shift because someone wanted a shift change (there could be a reason for it but to my mind there isn't, someone just fancied an early shift).

I have childcare to consider and can't just be dropped in it like that.

I've put my foot down and refused to swap.

AIBU to think you can't change the rota without at least considering that other people have to make plans

Is there a policy around this? In my NHS job there's a clear cut off point after which you can't be forced to change shifts (i think it's 2 weeks).

Your manager should absolutely draw your attention to the fact she's changed the rota after it's been put out.

I don't think you can assume your colleague just fancied a swap, there might be a good reason that you don't know about.

When I've worked in places which had rotas the rule was that after the rota had been printed you had to ask to change shifts, not just swap them around without asking. You got away with it pretty much if it had only just been printed and the person you wanted to swap with wasn't in and hadn't seen it yet!

That's absurd - they can't not tell you that they've changed your shift. I'd definitely be having a serious word. YANBU at all.

As far as I'm aware they can't change your rota once you've been given it without consulting you and you have the right to say no to the change. Could be wrong but that was what I was told years ago when my first manager did that to me

Check your contract.most state that they can do whatever works best for the business no matter how bloody annoying

I'd be emailing HR or a supervisor to ask for clarification 'for future reference'. Ask what the protocol is for changing shifts, when the cut of point for changes is, if it is your responsibility to check, if so how often, or is it someone elses responsibility to inform you, if so who.
