rude checkout assistant

Just back from doing my weekly shop. Shop was busy and not enough checkouts open so assistant packing shelves was asked to go on till. with a loud tut she flounced on, openly annoyed and started firing my shopping along the belt. Due to her speed she was finished before I had time to pack them all and proceeded to sigh and leave me to get on with it. My son has a part-time job in the shop so I felt awkward about speaking up about her behaviour. Now I just feel like shit because I let her off with it. AIBU to be annoyed with myself now for being such a wimp?

I had a checkout assistant today who asked me if I needed a bag when I was buying about 5 carrier bags worth of stuff then huffed when I said yes! Confused

I have worked in shops before and there is no need for rude and huffy behaviour from the assistants even if they are in a bad mood or whatever.

MillyChristmas · 08/12/2013 18:39

Well Tikka don't come to Wales. We don't give you bags anyway unless you ask and pay for them. Its the law here...Xmas Smile

StarSwirl92 · 08/12/2013 18:40

The look of disgust on her face might have caused me to feel a little aggrieved. Though I was pretty ill and I couldn't be sure it was personal so I just left it (see I'm not entirely unreasonable Grin) Still leaving a till switched on with a customer packing away her shopping in close proximity, without notifying anyone that you are leaving said till, is a breach of protocol at best.

In the end though these are the people that represent the company and I know that customers can be just as shitty as staff because they are all people. But when there are people who put so much effort into making the experience a positive one, something as simple as not throwing your shopping down the end of the till, shouldn't be beyond someone.

MillyChristmas · 08/12/2013 18:43

Why was she disgusted though Star....did you wipe your nose with your hands or something.......cant think why else she would be disgusted but I guess she had her reasons. Unusual though.....as I said you are not allowed to just walk off a till in Tesco. Seriously a discipline issue.

MillyChristmas · 08/12/2013 18:44

Not that I think you did wipe your nose with your hands or anything....sorry.......just cant think why she would do that Xmas Confused

GiveItYourBestFucker · 08/12/2013 18:50

Yanbu. Unless it was Lidl.

StarSwirl92 · 08/12/2013 18:52

Maybe she had a hand germ problem, there was a thread on here a while ago about a woman who couldn't stand spit and a checkout assistant licked her loyalty card. She wanted to buy a new purse because it was now infected with his spit. A few people thought she was over reacting but I would've burnt my purse because that really is unreasonable checkout assistance!

So maybe she just really couldn't stand the thought of my germ infested hands. I guess I never looked at it from her perspective (and now I'm defending her, wow I'm odd).

Sorry for hijacking the thread Blush

MammaTJ · 08/12/2013 18:52

With little things like this, I either deal with it at the time, or make a decision to let it go.

You didn't deal with it at the time, so let it go!

MillyChristmas · 08/12/2013 18:56

Star whatever her problem was, you still felt bad and annoyed that she left you to do your own packing.

ProfYaffle · 08/12/2013 18:57

Oh I know how you feel op. I had a check out issue the other day (won't bore everyone with the tedious details) and was absolutely kicking myself for not speaking up. That's the bit that annoys me, I disappoint myself on a regular basis!

SirChenjin · 08/12/2013 18:57

Unless it was Aldi or Lidl then YANBU. I have great delight in firing off snotty emails to store managers when I've received crap service. I've worked in a supermarket, in a call centre, been a waitress, worked in shops etc etc in my younger days - manners and a smile cost nothing and I always managed to be polite to customers, so if I don't get good service I have no hesitation in letting the store know.

IronOrchid · 08/12/2013 19:15

Not directed at OP, but hate hate HATE serving people that are obviously (and martyr-like mopey) full of germs. Assistant was probably pissed off you were spreading your cold, increasing the chances of her having to take time off sick.

I douse my hands with antibac after serving snivellers, and if they get offended then tough shit. Keep your germs to yourself.

sutekidane · 08/12/2013 19:21

I'm going to sneeze in the face of every checkout assistant now just in the hope that I manage to get ironorchid.

IronOrchid · 08/12/2013 19:27

If you don't mind an antibac facial, be my guest!

sutekidane · 08/12/2013 19:29

You'll have to catch me first Grin

Nah, I agree really. The worst are the ones who put the money in their hand and then bloody cough all over it right before they hand it to you. I know money is germy anyway but I don't need the bonus germs added right in front of me Shock

IronOrchid · 08/12/2013 19:38

Urg! And the ones who tweak their snobby beak between thumb and forefinger then proceed to touch everything in sight. Dirty gits.

sutekidane · 08/12/2013 19:55

Or the ones who lick their fingers before they sort out the notes, hand you them and the wet touches you!

SanityClause · 08/12/2013 19:59

She was having a shit day. It was a brief moment of annoyance in yours. Get over it.

monkeynuts123 · 08/12/2013 20:00

What exactly did she do wrong? Sorry I missed the point.

SirChenjin · 08/12/2013 20:14

How do you know she was having a shit day? She was asked to serve customers - you know, the things that keep your shop going and you in a job. Poor her.

WhenSarahAndStuckUpTheChimney · 08/12/2013 22:07

My mum was shopping yesterday and asked an assistant who looked about the same age as my nephew (who she was buying for) which of two presents he would prefer if it were for him.

He just said "To be honest, I couldn't give a fuck which one you buy" and walked away.

My friend was shopping in Asda and as the assistant rang a pack of dog food through the till he asked her if she was buying her lunch. This was about 10am and it took her a second to twig he meant the dog food. She was not happy. And she's quite scary. I think he probably regretted the comment Smile
