Is it unreasonable to use my birthday vouchers to buy something for someone else?

My boyfriends mum bought me some vouchers for a shop which I love, I do want to use them, but not right now as I want to put them towards something.

I've seen two things which I want to get ds and bf for Christmas, but can't really justify spending the money, yet the vouchers are just sitting there..

Mumsnet jury?

I do it all the time.

If people give me vouchers as a gift, they are mine to do as I please with.

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Use them, as long as you keep the cash to the same value to put aside to go towards the item you want :)

FunkyBoldRibena · 08/12/2013 11:14

Do what you want - you are an adult and they are your vouchers.

YANBU as it's your present. Just seems a shame you won't actually get a present yourself due to your generosity.

I've done the same with some vouchers I'd been given earlier in the year, they've all been spent on Christmas pressies, it's saved me a fortune!

I did it just recently. Got vouchers for Next and used them to buy dd some new school shoes (size 8 at 10 years of age so difficult to find suitable school shoes). Mil who gave me the vouchers would never ask what I spent them on so no worries.

I always end up spending any money I get for my birthday (end of October) on Christmas presents.

DorisShutt · 08/12/2013 12:15

I got vouchers for a specific shop for my birthday; but there was nothing I wanted, so I used the vouchers to buy Christmas presents for others, and the equivalent money to buy something different for myself - actually two things as I could get what I wanted cheaper IYSWIM.

Thanks all, I shall go for it then. I will be buying stuff from there sometime next year so I guess it makes little difference in the long run.

Do what you want with them.
My Mum always gave me £50 for my birthday which is right by Christmas, it always got spent on Christmas.

Rather than loose them or let them go out of date, make use of them now. Nothing wrong with retaining your own funds.

OnDasherrorOnDancerror · 08/12/2013 14:57

My birthday is in November so for as long as I can remember I've been using my birthday money to buy people's Christmas presents. You might as well do it if you're happy to.
