My dog costs more to insure than my car Confused. Same company. Dog is 2yr of neutered German shepherd. Car is 10yr old Volvo estate.

Didn't you cost it up before you got the dog?

PansOnFire · 07/12/2013 21:49

My dog also costs more to insure than my car, the pet insurers put the premium up every year because 'certain breeds are known to develop medical conditions'. Recently my parent's dog died and they claimed on the insurance as it was an accident. Because the didn't have the purchase receipt they could only claim up to £400, yet they had a full veterinary history and a kennel club papers/proof of registration. They had also quoted a market value for the dog at its current age at significantly higher. The dog had cost £1000, they said it was worth more than this. Yet they only paid out £400. It's a scam.

And dint get me started on mobile phone insurance...

I've been advised to put money aside every month instead of paying into pet and mobile phone insurance and I think I'm going to do it.

Pans - I'd heard that too. Think the big named / general insurance companies cash in on people's fears. We've had a quote from a specialist firm which is half the cost yet much better policy but was a real eye opener that a company which advertising it's great prices is really ripping you off

Old Volvos never go wrong though.

Lonecatwithkitten · 07/12/2013 22:56

Volvos rarely go wrong, sadly German shepherds go wrong a lot.
I have one GSD patient who managed to claim over £15,000 in a single year on four separate conditions all common GSD problems he just choose to get them all in one year.

I don't insure my animals. I pay for problems if they come up. Insurance policies tend to have a considerable excess, numerous exclusions and only cover a limited amount of fees. We've saved loads over the years, paying out far less than the premiums would have been.

If we couldn't afford to find a chunky lump sum if needed then we'd insure rather than risk not being able to pay for care.

Ours is only £17 month. Last year was £15. Sainsburys. 2 year old Staffie.
I know my mum's insurance for a 8 yr old mongrel (?) was astronomical so are not insuring her this year.

your much more likely to claim on your pet insurance than your car!! Also it tends to go up each year because sadly like humans pets tend to get more problems as they get older.

Also don't forget a company that offers cheap premiums could be a false economy. after all paying £15 a month rather than £20 isn't much help if the £15 doesn't pay out Wink
