JustRestingMyEyes · 07/12/2013 21:04

Fair enough eau Sorry Flowers

McFox · 07/12/2013 21:08

Sad, consumerist shite. It makes me mad!! Come one and all and bring your children to be indoctrinated - it's the holidays after all FFS.

EauRougemasTree · 07/12/2013 21:09

No worries! I'm just getting my knickers in a twist about it at the moment because one of my friends said in front of my DDs the other day that Father Christmas was made up by Coca Cola Angry Luckily I don't think it registered with them.

The red and white goes back years, it's from Dutch and German traditions- Sinterklaas.

Iwaswatchingthat · 07/12/2013 21:09

I must admit I would be quite excited if I saw it.

eau Nightmare! [shocked] Sad

I have to have four visitors here...Pelzmärtel, Niklaus yesterday, the Christkind on Xmas eve then Santa on the 25th - Kindergarten has a lot to answer for!

Nonetheless I like the truck as the Santa photo has been free here for three years and only Karstadt does a Santa in shop who can be very direct if at end of shift the Christkindlmarkt Santa costs a bomb.

That said i was [shocked] at the cola advent calendar...24 x 0.15 ml cans. Was abizarre concept as v. big for a fridge and if on a table,
who wants warm coke? Confused

DoJo · 07/12/2013 21:18

JustResting Even Coke themselves only say that their ads 'helped' shape the modern day version of Father Christmas, so they acknowledge that it wasn't really down to them.
As perpetrators of human rights abuses, ecological destruction, racism, violence and more, I think Coke is the antithesis of Christmas and why anyone would want to participate in what is basically an live action advert is beyond me...

JustRestingMyEyes · 07/12/2013 21:22

molding Hmm, not sure i would queue at -10 for that...

....but I now want elves!!! And free coke!!! [entitled much]

We got free coke zero in a marketing push once but under 16s were not allowed any due to its caffeine content.

SlicedLemon · 07/12/2013 21:23

I think Father Christmas and coca cola must be a fairly modern thing. I say this because people rave on about the Father Christmas and coke tradition but its not much of one to me. Coke was like gold dust when I was growing up and certainly not linked with Christmas or Father Christmas in anyway during my childhood of the 70's to mid 80's.

So I am guessing this "tradition" we get rammed down out throats through the marketing etc is a very recent tradition - if that imo.

I don't get the whole truck thing either. Although would grab a free coke if I was coming out of my local Asda and it was there.

BroomstickRider · 07/12/2013 21:23

scarlet I hate that song too but now I have it stuck in my head!

I wouldn't go and see it but I happened upon it today and it was jolly enough. Christmas music playing, free coke for me from the elves. About as arbitrary as most Christmas stuff!

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 07/12/2013 23:31

We went last year, and intend to go this year.
DS loves cars and trucks, so seeing one all lit up and Christmassy really appealed to him. He loved having his photo taken in front of the truck, though we did it ourselves as the queue was massive and it was raining heavily.
We intend to go along when it comes to our town this week.

WorraLiberty · 07/12/2013 23:34

I would

Why not? It's just a bit of fun.

You could ask the same question about absolutely anything that other people enjoy and you don't.

breatheslowly · 07/12/2013 23:34

YANBU - we happened to see it when we were on holiday in Berlin (it went past our hotel) and it seemed utterly pointless.

RedLondonBus · 07/12/2013 23:36

Well coca cola has proved to be more involved with Christmas than baileys,Pepsi, any mineral water etc etc

shewhowines · 07/12/2013 23:43

I'm thinking of going Xmas Blush

KenAdams · 07/12/2013 23:47

I can't wait to go, it's a brilliant atmosphere. The more people that hate it, the less of a queue for me!

ICameOnTheJitney · 08/12/2013 00:32

RedLondon and more than Jesus? Hmm Or are most people just interested in consumables?

WorraLiberty · 08/12/2013 00:37

If you don't believe in God then you're not going to give Jesus a second thought.

The Coca Cola lorry is fun and lots of people can't wait to see the advert on TV because it makes them feel Christmassy.

And many non religious people celebrate Christmas as part of our culture, rather than connecting any kind of belief with it.

Fraggle3112 · 08/12/2013 00:44

YANBU I don't get it either.

I live close to city centre so when it came here I walked down with DS in his buggy to see what was going on.

I got there and kept walking directly to M&S cafe when I saw the huge bloody queue in freezing old temps to get a photo with the thing! Haha. My scone and cup of tea where lovely though!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 08/12/2013 05:56

Not my cup of tea, but each to their own.

sashh · 08/12/2013 06:40

I've missed this completely. Not sure I'm happy you have told me about it OP

Bah humbug and all that.

dollywashers

Seriously, you watch the ad? With popcorn like a movie?

More bah and even more humbugs

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 08/12/2013 07:03

A friend in Calgary has posted pictures today of the Canadian Pacific Christmas train. It looked pretty awesome. There was a concert with The Tenors.

And no Coca Cola :)

Sister77 · 08/12/2013 07:53

It can to a town near me and all the local "hobos" were mixing dodgy stuff in their free coke! Not a pretty sight!
