Went to doctors today.sat for half an hour waiting to be seen. Back and knee have been sore every winter for 3 years now. Gp basically dismissed me and said he didn't know what it could be laughed and told me to get on with it. I felt like i had wasted his time. It was almost like i was back at school being told off by a teacher. Im now sat at home crying with pain anger and embarrassment. Aibu to feel like he should have done more?

What kind of pain relief have you taken to help with this? Is it painful all time during the winter? What do you mean by sore - how does it present?

SecretWitch · 06/12/2013 16:53

I'm sorry he made you feel this way. It is terrible to be disrespected by the very people we depend to take care of us. Did he give you no advice at all? I would ask to see someone else.

Damn it presents in a way that i cant bend my knee or walk very long before it buckles.never any problems with the knee during warmer weather.my back is sore when lifting my children sitting in one position for too long or standing for too long.both the knee and back make a cracking noise when i stand from sitting.
Iv been on numerous anti inflammatory tablets but due to my stomach i cant take any really strong ones and it was the stronger ones which made the tiniest bit of a difference. I also tried heat sprays, muscle rubs etc but none of them worked.
Secret he felt my knee and seen the obvious swelling, laughed said he didn't know what it was. No further appointments for deeper investigation were even discussed. I was told to just live with it. But how can i when the simplest of tasks like walking, sitting and bending leave me in agony.

Cracking noises don't usually matter much. A knee that gives way might have a problem with the cartilage. Aching back is common in people who lift a lot - small children e.g. Physio might help perhaps - I'd get back in touch with the surgery.

FryOneFatManic · 06/12/2013 17:50

Go to a different GP, if there's one at the practice. This isn't acceptable. You have clear symptoms like swelling and so on, so it should be investigated.

Snooter i had physio for a year on my back after mu eldest was born as a different doc said back then that it was loss of muscle/sciatica. The physio didn't really do much to ease the pain. Im going to try and see another doctor next week if i can get an appointment. I just don't want to be dismissed again.

Don't let them dismiss you. Write down notes to take with you - I always forget stuff when I actually get in. Everything that you've written above. Then if they say I don't know what that could be, you say well could you refer me to someone who might? You shouldn't have to be in pain every winter, it isn't acceptable, so don't let them make you accept it. Ask lots of questions - remember that it should be a dialogue, not a one way monologue from the Dr. Don't leave the room until you know what the outcome of the appointment is.

I'm feeling strangley cross on your behalf OP!

nona2706 · 06/12/2013 18:54

Thank you redexpat. When i get my next appointment in going to ask for a different doctor and take a list of questions and my symptoms in with me. This is a new surgery so they haven't had my notes sent from my old surgery yet. Dont know if that would make a difference to the way the gp treated me or not today. Im so angry. This has been 3 years now and its just getting worse and although my last doctor was trying to make a diagnosis this one didn't seem in the slightest bit interested.
