To wonder why some mothers leave their baby barefoot in December?

I have seen this a bit lately. I understand barefoot at home but why on earth would anyone take their baby out in December barefoot? Not even socks on, bare little toes poking out the bottom of trousers. Covered with a blanket perhaps in the street but once in a playgroup baby is barefoot, or even sometimes out in the street barefoot. I'm thinking of one particular example and it's not that baby takes them off, just there are never any socks, why?!

And I really do not get the OBSESSION some people have with babies wearing socks.

In the height of this lovely warm summer I had people mentioning to me that my baby had no socks on.

Um yeah, that's because it's fucking boiling. I'm not wearing any socks and haven't for weeks. Why should she?

Being barefoot is ace.

Once she starts wearing shoes she'll barely ever have her feet uncovered, so she might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

DeMaz · 05/12/2013 21:31

I can't stand seeing babies without socks or any outerwear for that matter, especially if the mother or father are wearing something warm on their feet and body!
Can't get your baby to keep socks on? Put on tights or just keep putting the socks back on for them!

JoinYourPlayfellows · 05/12/2013 21:35

I can't stand seeing babies trussed up like little stuffed chickens wearing way too many clothes, unable to move their limbs freely because they are wearing loads of layers, and looking uncomfortably warm because they are forced to wear coats and blankets in mind weather.

Wearing tights under trousers feels HORRIBLE. It's something you do when it's snowing and want to stay out making snowmen and sledding for hours.

On a normal winter's day, there's no need for it. I don't wear tights under my own trousers, so I'm not going to submit my 17 month old to that indignity.

DD liked having bare feet at playgroup. There was no difference in temperature at our playgroup between summer and winter.

BTW when I used to dress her how the judgmental types wanted she would be red-faced and sweaty. Too hot is worse than a bit too clod for babies. Especially as she has her Scottish, Polish and Russian genes to keep her warm.

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 05/12/2013 21:36

*too clod?

Me2Me2 · 05/12/2013 21:38

It may not be something you'd do but there may be reasons for why other parents are doing something you don't approve of. I sometimes find myself in situations which, to the outsider, make me look like a terrible parent but there is always a back story

LittleBabySqueakSqueak · 05/12/2013 21:43

Sock ons are GENIUS! Every playgroup I've been to has been boiling though, so perfectly toe-friendly.

JoinYourPlayfellows · 05/12/2013 21:49

I don't like sock-ons.

I prefer not to put anything so tight on my baby's feet.

But somehow I can still see babies wearing them and not think much about it all.

I don't even get the tiniest little bit sad/upset/worried/concerned/irritated.

It is fascinating the things people like to get all judgy about.

Fucking SOCKS ffs. :o

noblegiraffe · 05/12/2013 21:53

I did have sock-ons for my ten month old. She kept pulling them off, they roll up into a lovely teeny tiny chocking risk.

Binned the sock-ons.

StillaChocoholic · 05/12/2013 21:55

DS takes his socks off and eats them so I only put them on if we are going to walk far. Today we had a two minute walk from home to the baby group so I didn't bother with socks. He has his cosy toes and when I got him out of the pram his feet were lovely and warm.

enormouse · 05/12/2013 21:58

I had sock ons too. They were great whilst they fit him but now he's too big for them.
I find lace up boots and converse plus socks last a bit longer than the velcro strap shoes.

He can't bear being too hot though and its one of his quirks I've had to get used to. I remember taking him to a shopping centre at Christmas when he was about 3 months old and he was the surly, angry, red faced baby in just a vest and socks whilst the other tiny ones were well bundled up in snowsuits, hats and cosytoes. Catsbum faces all round.

SomethingkindaOod · 05/12/2013 21:59

Sock Ons are great. Did you know that a 5 year old can make a really smart dress out of them for a My Little Pony? Bugger all use for mine on their feet though..
I've put tights on my 3 in cold weather as babies but they are all bare feet fans and the first thing to come off when they get home is the shoes and socks. In the toddlers case she's started to take her pants off to get to the tights.
They spent the whole summer in the garden bare foot and I got cats bummed for that off a few visitors too..

DeMaz · 05/12/2013 21:59

Oh and the best is when you see a baby with no socks with a snotty, runny nose!

I never see parents walking around with no socks?

PrimalLass · 05/12/2013 22:00

My child has some strange thermal properties. He took his socks off, and at 8 still hates them.

I hate seeing babies wrapped up too much. Poor wee souls. Particularly big unnecessary shoes.

PrimalLass · 05/12/2013 22:00

DeMaz, I can't bear socks and never wear them.

QuintessentialShadows · 05/12/2013 22:02

Because some mothers have not heard of clothes with feet, for baby?

Because some mothers dont realize that baby does not intentionally "take his socks off" it just happens when they drag them off, rub their feet together? And baby does not know that taking their socks off will make their feet cold?

JoinYourPlayfellows · 05/12/2013 22:02

"Oh and the best is when you see a baby with no socks with a snotty, runny nose!"

I know!

What are they supposed to wipe their snot on if they've no socks?

QuintessentialShadows · 05/12/2013 22:03

I think some mothers should go and sit outside on a bench in the park for an hour or two, barefeet.

bluecheeseforbreakfast · 05/12/2013 22:04

Because it is safer to have bare feet whilst crawling/walking. When ds was learning to crawl he also had bare knees and arms.

SomethingkindaOod · 05/12/2013 22:04

Really? I only put socks on when I have to leave the house in cold weather. It must be genetic because my parents are exactly the same..
I've actually totally foxed Dd2 with her bare feet fetish by getting her some Peppa Pig snow boots. She adores them and spends all her time in the buggy talking to them Grin

busylizzie76 · 05/12/2013 22:04

I used tights on my DCs for precisely this reason Grin

What I hate to see is a mum and/or dad who are all wrapped up cosy in jackets etc....and their child is wearing a strappy sundress or short sleeved top and shorts and are crying or actually shivering.... What is all that about? I think I over wrapped my children rather than under iykwim

JoinYourPlayfellows · 05/12/2013 22:06

"I think some mothers should go and sit outside on a bench in the park for an hour or two, barefeet."

I'm sure plenty of mothers are out in sandalled feet with no socks for hours and hours for much of the year.

It's actually quite pleasant.

My ds2 is 3 and I got judged all the time when he was a baby because he refused point blank to wear socks. (Or clothes in general, tbh he's happier naked!)
Today on the school run he was wearing jeans, short sleeved T-shirt and trainers with no socks.
He threw his coat at me with a 'no mummy too hot'

I remember a kindly man in Tesco attempting to put DD's sock back on when she had pulled it off. She was about 8 months old and gave him a serious kick. That is why she might not have been wearing socks.
