They are all over the place around here. It REALLY bugs me.

I don't even know if it's legal, but it's public pavements. It's not always even infront of houses, so I can't see the reasoning.

Am I the only one this really gets on the wick of?

I know its a mare but my cul de sac Is so narrow if I didnt you would not be able to drive down the road. And my drive is not always empty as I have more than one car.

That's a cautionary tale ivykaty.

I must admit that this thread is making me think twice about where I park. But it is obviously a massive problem everywhere, so how do we deal with it? Just telling people not to drive is unworkable. In many places where there are no jobs people have to drive to work because public transport isn't an option. Telling car owners to move house where there is off road parking isn't always an option.

Ideally, the councils should provide more car parks for housing areas where there is no parking provision, but that would mean knocking down existing buildings.

I really don't think parking drama should get as far as deciding between one person being seriously injured whilst walking in the road or a whole street of people being endangered because of fire engine access.

In either situation I'd be pissed if it happened to me because of something as petty as parking.

The fact it's being used as a serious justification is pretty concerning actually.

as a guide dog owner it drives me insane. ditto people who park across drop curbs. I have no issue in expressing loudly my thoughts on the idiots who clearly have no consideration for anyone else but themselves.

My personal view is that there should be a restriction on the number of cars you are allowed to have registered to an address. Any more than say two cars (and I am being lenient, personally I think it should be just one) will mean higher road and council tax bills. The additional revenue raised could then be used to build designated car parks in which people could then park their cars and walk to their houses.

Yes some people need to be able to drive but the "need" to drive is vastly exaggerated and people are often bloody lazy. There are parents round here who drive from two streets away, park their car in my street then walk the two minutes to school to collect their children, then drive the two streets back home again. I live in Orpington near London and our public transport is fantastic, there is no need to be able to drive everywhere.

For those who continue to excuse parking on the pavements, advice from a mechanic might make you think twice. It can damage the underside of your car, especially the exhaust.

Agree wannaBe

Anyone know if it's still not allowed if on a private road? I have no idea if these laws are for any road or if on a private road you can screw laws and be as thoughtless as you want?

WorraLiberty · 07/12/2013 23:36

You have to park on the pavements here.

If you didn't, you'd get towed for obstructing the road as the streets are so narrow (built when horses and carts were the main mode of transport).

It may be worth anyone having issues with parking in their road to speak to their local PCSOs or their council. Some are great even if it's just advice they give. But don't use any of those crap fix my street type websites/apps. Some councils don't accept them and they are generally shit. Email directly or phone them.
