We went to the local cake shop on the way home from school earlier. I had coconut cake (yet to eat it so no verdict to deliver, before anyone asks). DS2 had some chocolate crunch. DS1 however, opted for bread and butter pudding because 'he's had it at school and he loves it'. I was a bit Hmm but went with it.

He had one bite about an hour ago and declared it to be nothing like the one at school. Could he have something else? So I directed him to the packet of snack Oreo biscuits or the mini packet of Chocolate Animals. Could he have both? No, he had to choose.

Thus ensued a tantrum about how he couldn't choose! Seriously. He got in a temper because he didn't know which one he wanted most.

AIBU to think this is the silliest reason for a tantrum ever? Having a choice of two yummy snacks? Enlighten me with the silliest thing/s your child (or even you!) have ever stropped about.

Disclaimer: I know the tantrum was really because he couldn't have both. He had the Oreo's in the end.

Nah, he's a child. Sometimes they just act like children and are totally illogical (to adults). Sometimes they are just brats. Just think - in 10 years time he will be SO embarrassed if you mention it to him because he'll have forgotten.....and you won't.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 04/12/2013 21:21

I seriously found it funny. How are you meant to take them seriously when they do that? I just said 'well, choose or don't have one'. He stopped then Grin

It was the flopping about that did it - he looks like a fish out of water when he does that. Bizarre.

Grin DS3 has just had the mother and father of all tantrums because his letter to Father Christmas has already been sent, and he'd seen something else he'd like to add to it.

I came very close to 'fessing up!

LineRunner · 04/12/2013 21:23

The first year they had chocolate advent calendars they (the calendars not the DC) were in the bin on December 2nd because they couldn't eat all the chocolates at once.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 04/12/2013 21:24

We haven't written our letters yet. DS1 changes his mind weekly about what he wants. I have sorted DD (Sylvanian Families Seaside Cafe) and DS2 (Leapad Explorer) but every time I think I have it in the bag with DS1, he changes his sodding mind again.

I may just buy him some chocolate biscuits. Two packets, so he doesn't have to choose Wink

How do they do that flopping about thing? It is amazing. My DD does it really well. She also excels in stomping and door slamming! She is 8!

DS recently had a paddy because he had decided to wear his Spiderman costume to school on con the parents out of another quid Hero day and so that was what had been put out for him to wear. He is 7.

welshnat · 04/12/2013 21:25

My DS usually tips food/drink onto the floor and then has a tantrum because the floor is dirty!!

Heartbrokenmum73 · 04/12/2013 21:26

My youngest brother used to get his advent calendar on 1st December and say he was going to keep it in his bedroom. All chocolates would be gone by 2nd December - parents never learned.

We have the traditional advent calendars (with the little pictures in) but I also hang a felt one with pockets. I only load each pocket before I go to bed the night before Grin

God, I sound awful grim, don't I?

Tell him the last posting date for any requests is tomorrow.

After that he can't change his mind.

The end.

MammaTJ

DS1 is almost 9! He used to do a sort of running on the spot thing when he had one on him - until I started doing the Riverdance theme every time he did it!

They're not embarrassed to do it in public either are they? But never in front of their friends!

DD had a temper tantrum today ( she's 2) because I was melting chocolate and refilling the two mould/ windows she'd opened whilst I was on the phone to an aunt hearing some very sad news.

She'd be devastated if her elder brothers were opening their advents and getting chocolates and she didn't get one, yet was shouting at me not to touch her chocolates. You just can't win.

I love this. Grin

DS tantrum today was because he walked to the kitchen to tell me something and couldn't remember what it was when he got there. Oh, it was not because he couldn't remember - oh no - it was because he'd walked all the way there and couldn't remember. You'd think we live in a huge mansion not a 2 bed flat!!!!

littleblackno · 04/12/2013 21:35

My ds(8) has had MANY he really has got it down to a fine art. but the one that I will always remember was when he was about 2.5 in a super market car park, total melt dowm because he wanted to drive, it was his turn and why was I not sharing and taking turns like i told him to do with his toys! I can't wait till he brings home his 1st girlfriend and I can share that one!! hahaha

worriedabout · 04/12/2013 21:37

Today DS2 had a tantrum today at a Christmas party because he wanted to take the presents home. The presents were not for the kids attending this rather fortunate event but for charity. After explaining to him who they were for and why he then went on to cry "but mummy I have no toys".

realblueprint · 04/12/2013 21:37

A practically 9 year old who chose a cake in a shop that they then refused to eat wouldn't be getting any more treats out of me.

cfc · 04/12/2013 21:37

This will out me to anyone who knows me, but my eldest had a tantrum at 3 y.o. because (cue breathless, teary voice) "the DOG...sob...LOOKED AT MEEEE....WAIL...!!".

Eejit.

puntasticusername · 04/12/2013 21:37

DS (2.11)'s biggest meltdowns generally happen because we can't turn back time.

The other day I flushed the loo for him. I know. Worst mother ever, right? I said sorry; I said go on, flush it again then - no, that wouldn't do.

I said in future I would try and remember to ask him first (even though he hasn't been bothered about pressing the magic button for weeks now, THAT'S WHY I DID IT IN THE FIRST PLACE, dammit). No dice.

His dad manfully offered to step up and do a wee himself so that DS could flush it away for him. This kind suggestion was greeted with...utter disdain.

I. WANT. TO. FLUSH. MY. POO. MYSELF MAMA.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 04/12/2013 21:39

real - I bow to your infinite wisdom.

He really didn't like the cake though! His face crumpled up in disgust. That was almost as amusing as the tantrum over two snacks.

OP posts:
puntasticusername · 04/12/2013 21:40

I mean, I can understand where he's coming from, sort of - it's just that he really seems to think this is something we can and will fix for him if he only gets upset enough!

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 04/12/2013 21:40

The best one from my son was on the way to school when he declared he couldn't take his star wars bike to school because it was cool and he would get in trouble for having a cool bike. I dismissed, I reasoned, I reassured, I tried coercion and the bike ended up in the hedge ten minutes later with me storming ahead

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 04/12/2013 21:40

5 year old DS cried all the way home from school because when we got to the pedestrian crossing their were some other people there already and one of them had pressed the button. Grin

SamsGoldilocks · 04/12/2013 21:40

My ds had a massive strop because I put the wrong sock of a pair on his right foot. The sock in my hand should obviously have gone on the left foot. Half an hour later calm was restored.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 04/12/2013 21:41

At least he wants to flush it though - the intention is there (sort of Grin)

DS2 used to do the run-away-screaming thing when toilets were flushed. Still won't go near hand-dryers.
