Me and OH dont drive and live 16 miles away from family who drive and the maternity hospital. If i go into labour before my booked section i dont want to call an ambulance cos i feel like il be wasting resources when i have. put money aside for a cab but OH thinks im mad! Aibu?

Both times my waters went first and it made a right mess in dh's car. Second time I was prepared so there should be no issues if you protect the seat. I went into labour very fast second time and midwife had told me to ring 999 if anything happened (33 weeks) but we were 10 mins away so it wasnt worth it.

Lots of people DO call ambulances - it fucks paramedics off immensely.

They are not taxis, they are not midwives.

They understand if you go from contractions every 16 mins
to every 10 seconds in a short space of time, but you do not need an ambulance when your waters are intact and your contractions are every 15 minutes.

Ring the labour ward, listen to their advice and make your own way unless instructed otherwise.

And don't call an ambulance and expect them to be impressed when the family follow behind in the car!!!!

(And paramedics CAN do something if the baby is coming/stuck - they've just changed the guidelines.)

Just to clarify - it fucks paramedics off when people call 999 to get a lift to the hospital, not for calling 999 generally!!! Grin

Ducks, I didn't mind even though I'm not usually great with heights (might have had other things on my mind Wink), but there was a building site there at the time (the new Alex) and the constant drilling noise nearly sent me mad!

Aww pixel my ds (now nearly 3) was due on Christmas day. Waited 5 days though, then poor dh who was only learning to drive had to drive me to the hospital (only 5 mins away) in the pitch dark on icy roads while I swore like a docker next to him. When we got there he had real trouble parking and I totally lost the rag, leapt from the car and ran to the maternity ward Blush. In hindsight we should have got a taxi! Had a homebirth for dd, far less stressful.

I'd take several towels. There can be a lot of fluid, I soaked three bath-sized ones!

With my ds I rang the midwives and they told me to ring an ambulance to go to the hospital. I left it as long as I possibly could but did end up going to hospital in the ambulance. I didn't ring 999 though, there was a different number I was given to speak to the paramedics. I did have ds fairly soon after getting there though. This was over 10 years ago now so things have probably changed.

My OH called the maternity unit for me as I could barely talk, they told him to call an ambulance, glad they did she arrived en route to the hospital! Would not have been fun in a taxi on the 30min drive!
