Chippy for tea?

DH text yesterday to say bil is coming for tea on Thursday.

I meal plan very very strictly and tomorrow night it's a breakfast tea.
That is sausage, bacon, eggs, beans.
Bil won't have any beans unless they are Heinz, only a certain type of sausage..you get the picture.
I shop at Aldi, so it's Aldi beans, richmond sausages, Aldi bacon....

Told DH he can get chippy as I am not pissing around buying stuff especially for his fussy brother. He is delighted as he loves chippy.

Would you?

Cheap beans are horrible.. They're not too bad if you're used to them being the way they are, but beans in a sauce that is the consistency of water are really not nice.

Even when cheaper versions of foods are made by the big brand names, they are not necessarily made in the same way with the same quality or quantity of ingredients.

youretoastmildred · 04/12/2013 13:54

That's not breakfast, it's a Mixed Grill. Should be served with a big pot of strong tea on the table. I'm coming over.

BigToesofFrog · 04/12/2013 13:56

I had some whole earth or some such baked beans the other day. They were NOT heinz beans. I'm not usually a fusspot but manky beans in watery sauce is grim.

I'm with those who say cook up an extra-posh breakfast tea. Get some heinz beans and nice sausages (just a few for him if you like, from the butcher/meat counter while you haver the richmonds if you like them). He is a guest, it's OK to make an effort, but this way would be cheaper than the chippy.

I would also be requiring DH to buy in the requisite things on his own spare time as its his fussy brother.

WandaDoff · 04/12/2013 13:59

It's a fry up.

VeganCow · 04/12/2013 14:21

He can eat whatever beans and sausage he likes at his house, eating out he should shut up and put up.

I dare you to buy a tin of Heinz, and a pack of Finest sausages, show him the tin and packet and say 'don't worry its Heinz beans, and decent sausages ' then go in the kitchen and open your Aldi beans and your Richmonds...see if he says anything. Oh, and save the decent stuff for yourselves at weekend Grin

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 04/12/2013 14:34

If your dh invites a guest for dinner at 2 days notice, then it's your dh's job to provide the dinner (either shop and cook, or buy in).

Although if I go to a family member's house mid-week for tea, eaten with the children, I don't expect a "special" meal. Eggs and beans would be very welcome!

jetsetlil · 04/12/2013 15:00

Heinz beans are shiite....Branston beans are the Don of all beans. I think your tea sounds nice. So does chippy too. No help whatsoever

firesidechat · 04/12/2013 15:19

jetset Branston beans are indeed far superior to Heinz.

Richmond sausages don't even look like food. Could be anything in those pink things.

jimijack · 04/12/2013 15:22

Aldi beans are lovely though, I mean really nice. Honestly.

SlimJiminy · 04/12/2013 15:37

I fucking hate all this Heinz beans nonsense. I completely agree that SOME beans can be awful, but have had no problems with Aldi or Asda beans (I can't remember any of the rubbish ones). I'm actually tempted to do a Smartprice V non-Smartprice blind beans test now and see what happens!

OP if I were you, I'd be going ahead with my usual planned meal and give him two options:

  1. Take it
  2. Leave it

I have absolutely no problems catering for specific dietary requirements, but fussy bugger is not a dietary requirement imo. He can eat Aldi beans. They won't kill him. He might not enjoy them as much as his precious Heinz beans, but he can do it. Wouldn't be allowed to leave the table without eating everything on his plate if he was in our house. Can't he just come round for a brew or something?

KateMoose · 04/12/2013 15:44

Richmond sausages are retch tastic- can't stand their texture and the odd pinkness. Aldi do some fab specialist sausages including cumberland chipolatas etc. Having said that, if he's coming for your tea and its breakfast tea (called cowboy supper here Grin) then thats what he should grin and bear.

jimijack · 04/12/2013 16:02

Ah but chippy tea has been mentioned. There will be no brew in the world to replace the chippy tea.

Tis done.
Amen. Grin

Loving the "mixed grill" sounds far posher than a breakfast tea.
Unfortunately, you can't polish a third and it will forever remain the much loved breakfast tea in our house.

OP posts:
jimijack · 04/12/2013 16:06

Turd NOT third.

WorraLiberty · 04/12/2013 16:09

In principle I will not buy special stuff for one person. DH can pay for chippy as its a rare treat in our house so everyone's a winner.

Yeah but your DH could just buy the beans and sausages and save a lot of money.

Admit it, you're craving a chippy tea and this is the perfect excuse! Grin

I really want one now too Sad

AdoraBell · 04/12/2013 16:15

YANBU

I can't understand being embarrased To serve whatever meal the hosts would have eaten. Especialy when someone says they are "coming over for tea" rather than having been invited for a dinner party, ifwism.

Dinner party is catered differently To a family meal and as such moré time is available for plannng. Coming over for tea Tomorrow means fitting in with the plans already made unless you have an intolerance, phobia or allergies. In which case the question should be "what are you planning?" and if it's something un súitable the response should be "I'll just pop in for a cup of tea then/maybe we can do it another day/How about you come To mine?"

jimijack · 04/12/2013 16:16

I bloody lurve chippy BUT slimming world won't allow it so I'm having aldi beans on toast.

Chippy fish is syn free if you take the batter off, and I usually make SW chips to go with it. Not that I have it very often though as the batter is the best bit.

diddl · 04/12/2013 16:44

Is there anything that you serve that BIL would eat?

If so I would probably have done a swap around to accommodate him.

Or for once got beans and sausage that he would eat.

Seems ridiculous to fork out for a chippy tbh.

SlimJiminy · 04/12/2013 16:46

There will be no brew in the world to replace the chippy tea.

Well I need am a snappy cow unless I have my morning brew along with copious amounts of tea every day. I could take it or leave it with a chippy tea.

diddl · 04/12/2013 16:48

Does anyone really still think of bacon/egg as breakfast?

It's a fry up to us-which can be eaten for any meal.

Ragwort · 04/12/2013 16:50

I wouldn't be happy that I was strictly meal planning and budgeting (to include Richmond sausages - yuk) but it is obviously not a problem for your DH to spend money on a 'chippy' tea. Are your finances completely separate Hmm?

cece · 04/12/2013 16:53

Oh my BIL is exactly like this. Will only eat Heinz beans (cold), etc, etc. There is a whole list of things he can't/won't eat.

Sigh - he is coming to us for Christmas.

Funnily enough he lived at home till he was late 30s also.

jimijack · 04/12/2013 17:20

No separate finances but once a month we have a takaway so this is going to be it for December.

Blueuggboots · 04/12/2013 18:05

If I invite people round for DINNER, then they get something nice.
If they're popping round for TEA, they get what is on the menu and take it or leave it!!!!
