'Inappropriate footwear' at work?

Babysealion · 02/12/2013 12:27

I work in high-end retail and am 32 weeks pregnant. My feet have swollen up and it's now uncomfortable for me to wear anything except my Ugg boots.
For the last week at work I have been wearing them along with maternity clothes - the dresses that my company sell no longer fit me, and look hideously skin tight now anyway!
I'm doing 9 and 10 hour days where I am stood on my feet almost constantly.
This morning my manager told me I had to go change my shoes and had to go back to wearing my old black work ones which literally do not fit me. I have been shopping to try and get a bigger size but I don't have a lot of spare money and I can't seem to get any comfortable ones that I don't have to shove my feet into.
Work have told me I am no longer allowed to wear my boots. AIBU to think this is unfair? Or am I being 'entitled' as someone at work so kindly put it?

You are "entitled" to wear supportive shoes that fit you at work. Ugg boots don't fit into that category though.

KirstyJC · 02/12/2013 12:29

What does your maternity risk assessment say? What provision have they made for you to ensure you have adequate rests and to prevent feet swelling? They have done a maternity risk assessment, right? And are regularly meeting with you to update it? It is a legal requirement I believe....

paintinglady · 02/12/2013 12:30

I am sorry but i dont think ugg boots are appropriate for work.

hillyhilly · 02/12/2013 12:32

I doubt that the only shoes that you can comfortably wear are Ugg boots and so does your employer by the look of it, be careful that you don't end up talking yourself into starting your maternity leave sooner than you want to.

Babysealion · 02/12/2013 12:32

My risk assessment just says I shouldn't do any heavy lifting/climbing ladders in the stock room etc

WilsonFrickett · 02/12/2013 12:33

If you work in high-end retail then no, Ugg boots aren't appropriate footwear. And they are super-unsupportive so won't be doing your feet any good either (God I sound like my mother).

So you have to sit down with your manager and come to a solution. Does your shop sell shoes?

monkeysox · 02/12/2013 12:34

You need regular breaks and access to a chair and toilet

MistAllChuckingFrighty · 02/12/2013 12:35

I meant that Uggs are not appropriate for your feet if they are swollen and you are heavily pg

No arch support whatsoever. I don't give a shit about how you look, I am thinking of your poor arches.

Babysealion · 02/12/2013 12:35

They do well shoes but just occasion type shoes with heels if you see what I mean.
Can anyone suggest a shop other than Clark's/Barrett's then for shoes as I have done my best to get another pair of shoes from both these shops. They might not be as supportive but my uggs are a damn sight comfier than wearing my old work shoes which are now too small and hurt to walk in.

Do you wear a onesie as well?

Justforlaughs · 02/12/2013 12:36

Firstly, I'd make sure that seriously swollen feet weren't a sign of something more sinister - probably not, especially if you are on your feet all day, but worth checking out
Secondly, your employer has a duty to accomodate your condition to an extent, and that might well mean, allowing you perform a different role where you get to sit down more. They should have done a maternity risk assessment and you need to abide by it.
Thirdly, Ugg boots are not really suitable footwear for work, but I would speak to my manager about the situation and ask what alternative, realistic solution they propose.

Babysealion · 02/12/2013 12:38

vtech is that supposed to be some goady dig? Hmm

tweetytwat · 02/12/2013 12:38

M and S are worth a try for sensible comfy shoes. I don't know anyone who would wear UGGs in a customer facing role for work, pregnant or not.

Babysealion · 02/12/2013 12:39

Justforlaughs I was worried about pre eclampsia when my feet started swelling but midwife says my blood pressure is fine, can swelling be caused by other things?

What about M&S, they have wide fitting shoes in all styles.

MistAllChuckingFrighty · 02/12/2013 12:39

I think it was, baby. Best ignored.

Yeah, M+S FootGlove thingies come in extra wide sizes and are very squishy.

Not the height of cool exactly, but needs must. And your arches will thank you for it.

AuntieStella · 02/12/2013 12:40

Depending on how your feet have changed, you could try Evans (wider fitting) or M&S Footgloves, or independent shoe shops and department stores which stock Van Dal.

Babysealion · 02/12/2013 12:40

tweety I never thought about M&S, thanks :)
I know my Uggs are not really 'appropriate' but I was just wondering what else I am supposed to wear as I have tried really hard over the last week to get another pair of shoes and can't seem to find a comfy pair :( and I can't hobble round all day at work in a pair of too small shoes, that's just as unprofessional.

mouldyironingboard · 02/12/2013 12:41

M&S and Next both have a good range of wider fit, low heeled shoes which will look smarter than Ugg boots.

JinglingRexManningDay · 02/12/2013 12:41

Low black wedges would be supportive and smart looking. New Look do wide fittings and with a pair of insoles they will do you for the next few weeks.

MistAllChuckingFrighty · 02/12/2013 12:42

Yeah, Evans !

I sound like a bloody parrot Smile

EntWife · 02/12/2013 12:44

Evans do a comfort range too. Not to badly priced either.

Babysealion · 02/12/2013 12:47

Thanks everyone for the ideas, will have a look online when I get home :)
Just really annoyed me that my manager didn't seem to want to offer a solution, especially when I'm doing a lot of extra hours for them over Christmas

OP posts:
SomethingkindaOod · 02/12/2013 12:48

Next do some good comfort wide fitting shoes but most of their flat shoes seem to be ballet style pumps at the moment, very smart looking though.
