Men wearing suits.

ItsAWonderfulCervix · 02/12/2013 08:58

Shirt, tie, jacket and trouser type suits.

It appears that that is the only thing a man can wear for work or to look smart but women can wear loads of stuff.

Do men mind not having the choice?

And is it weird that there is only one sort of 'uniform' for chaps?

The men in DHs oficce hate the fact that they have so little choice and have to wear shirt and tie on even the hottest day, whereas the women can wear pretty much whatever they want to. It seems like anything goes now, trousers, smart shorts, short skirts, long skirts, blouses, accessories, even "smart" vest tops are acceptable - how the hell is a vest top, smart??

samandi · 02/12/2013 15:29

how the hell is a vest top, smart??

Anything that doesn't cover the shoulders is not acceptable standard workwear imo.

Men are furious, especially in summer when they have to wear ties but women can turn up in t-shirts and flip flops.

LeBFG · 02/12/2013 15:35

Always used to annoy me the different dress standards for men and women in office type work. Women are damn near expected to wear makeup for example - there is no equivalent for men. Saying that, I hate the way most men look in a suit. I dunno - so many I worked with were just happy with cheapy material suits and shirts just make some men (and me) sweat like pigs - yuk. Glad to be out of it all now Smile.

I wear a uniform every day for work and love it.

I don't love the uniform, it's shit! but I love that I don't need 'work clothes', or have think about what I'm wearing every day.

When I end up leaving and changing jobs, I will envy the men their 'uniform' I think.

I do concede ties are outdated in the workplace though, nothing wrong with an open collar.

bobbywash · 02/12/2013 16:13

Tie wearing is not so common now in a lot of professions, although suits still are.

Waistcoats are coming back in vogue, but they have to be the right length. There is nothing worse than the rucked up shirt between waistband and waistcoat because it's too short.

Double cuff shirts have to be the way forward though

When I was at college all those years ago, one module of an enginerring degree was given over to this and other odd bits. Men are expected to wear a suit in formal situations. Blue or grey. Pale of either only in summer. Green for liberals-Guardian readers, brown for losers [apparently], dark grey is preferable. My ex was quite happy as it removed most of the choice about what to wear to work. The only things left were shirt and tie. Still plenty of scope for men to get it wrong just there, though.

I like men in suits, OH has to wear a suit and he has several really nice ones, mostly Jaeger but one utterly gorgeous and very expensive Brooks
Brothers.

I hate the trend in my offic, and I suppose others, for some men to wear suits with no ties. Really horrid, but even worse would be jeans or chinos.

I like working in an office with a strict dress code, if anything I think it could be stricter. I look at some of the women and think I'm better dressed when I'm doing cleaning at home compared to what you've turned up in.

I don't like women wearing trousers in the office but I don't like trousers or jeans, full stop. I don't own any. There's no rule against it but there's quite a lot of the professional female staff who don't wear trousers, including the younger ones.

I love men in suits. It's the one thing I don't like about DP working from home now.

Weegiemum · 03/12/2013 03:57

I wear my jeans and any vaguely presentable top to my (very casually dressed) workplace.

Dh used to wear a shirt/tie but it's been banned at his work. He's a doctor and apparently ties carry infection (as they're very rarely washed!).

He now has a great selection of smart non-tie type tops, mainly those button up neck grandad-style shirts. With chino-type trousers. And for those smart days, the ultimate country-GP accessory - a Harris Tweed jacket! (Actually a leaving gift from his previous job as a country GP in Harris!!).

Suits are for weddings and funerals for him.

TheZeeTeam · 03/12/2013 04:00

Saying all suits are the same is like saying all dresses are the same. They're really not.

Morloth · 03/12/2013 05:38

I have copied DH's suit.

He has for the whole time I have known him worn a pair of black trousers, a crisp white shirt, sometimes a tie depending on meeting schedule and in winter a jacket.

I now wear the same every day (without the tie).

No decisions required and cuts down on the washing.

DS1 wears white polo shirt and blue shorts for his school uniform, I pretty much buy that combo for weekends as well for both boys.

None of us give a fuck what we are wearing as long as it is clean and tidy and having a 'uniform' has really solved lots of time wasting.

littlewhitechristmasbag · 03/12/2013 05:51

My DH wears a suit to work. He has many suits, ties and shirts plus cuff links. He says he really likes wearing a suit. Dress down Friday confuses him no end.

tiredoldmum · 03/12/2013 06:03

There are good and bad sides to both.

A suit or uniform takes away the decision of what to wear each day. It is hard to get wrong unless it is poorly fitting or some odd ball colour or fabric.

It commands instant respect and better treatment.

For women, it depends on your figure. It was easier to look sharp in my youth when I was slender and could wear high heels.

Now I have the middle bulge, it seems no matter what I wear, it looks sloppy. I can't wear heels anymore either. I can barely wear flats without my bunions aching and feet swelling. ugh.

Then there is the hair, makeup, eyebrows, waxing, and nails that are required for women.

At work, I pretty much have to wear a suit to command respect from those who don't know me otherwise I look like a frumpy old lady.

For a man, even with the spare tire and bald head, a suit still looks pretty good.

BadLad · 03/12/2013 06:08

Ties are shit.

If I could go back in time, I'd seek out the bastard who invented them and hang him by the balls with his own invention.

I hate the damned things.
