To warn you all at this festive time of year

Not an AIBU, but just wanted to warn people so they don't get caught out.

Many stores now offer a click and collect service which is great. However, I and many others have clicked but then not collected as we have found a better deal en route and then can't be bothered to go to the store to collect and return.

Recently, I have found that if I haven't collected my item I haven't got an automatic refund. One department store refused to issue it as the item had been destroyed and they couldn't process a refund without the item. Another department store only refunded me after I contacted customer services 3 weeks after the item would have been returned to the warehouse. With one toy company, I had to fight for 3 months.

Obviously, the ideal solution is only use the service if you will 100% pick it up, but just wanted to warn people to keep an eye on bank statements - I suspect many stores are hoping that with such a high volume of purchases at this time of year customers won't notice that they haven't been refunded.

YABU, what did you expect?

WorraLiberty · 29/11/2013 23:01

I had no idea people clicked and then didn't collect because they found a better option.

I can see that causing problems (and eventually pushing prices up further) if too many people do this.

softlysoftly · 29/11/2013 23:01

YABU you bought it Confused

PeazlyPops · 29/11/2013 23:01

Is this a serious post? If it is, YABU!

clarinsgirl · 29/11/2013 23:02

Err, click and collect... You have bought the item, if you choose not to collect it then that's your problem.

LAlady · 29/11/2013 23:02

If I use the click and collect service, I collect. That's the whole point, surely? YABU

Peekingduck · 29/11/2013 23:02

When you "click" you've brought it.

Jinty64 · 29/11/2013 23:04

I think it would be reasonable to levy a service charge for the extra work staff are being put to. It would never occur to me to order something and not pick it up.

DeepThought · 29/11/2013 23:04

bizarre, I don't understand

Sirzy · 29/11/2013 23:05

You seem to misunderstand the idea of click and collect?

You have purchased the item. You need to pick it up. If you are daft enough not to pick it up why should you be automatically refunded?

BrianTheMole · 29/11/2013 23:07

It wouldn't cross my mind to pay for an item and then not collect Confused. Why put yourself through that hassle?

FredFredGeorge · 29/11/2013 23:07

pekingduck Maybe but as it's distance selling, you have the right to cancel it, seems unnecessary to just not bother rather than inform them though, and it's not surprising that it takes time to get a refund if you don't

The destruction thing is wrong of course, but if you fell for it, I'm not that bothered given you gave them no courtesy either. If you want to cancel. CANCEL, don't expect it to happen automatically YABU.

fuzzpig · 29/11/2013 23:07

When you click and collect, you buy when you click, or at least enter a 'contract' to purchase it I thought?

It's not like reserving a DVD at the library, where you don't put it on your ticket (and incur a rental charge) until after you pick it up.

I think, anyway

BsshBossh · 29/11/2013 23:08

YABU!

BlackholesAndRevelations · 29/11/2013 23:08
Confused

Click and collect means buy it, then pick it up! I'm Hmm that you would buy things from lots of different shops then just leave them there and expect an automatic refund!

Weird.

fuzzpig · 29/11/2013 23:08

(With the library example I meant to say, you could then get to the library and decide you don't want that DVD, so give it back without hiring it, so no rental fee)

picnicbasketcase · 29/11/2013 23:09

I'm surprised anyone needs to be warned that if you buy something and then don't bother to pick it up, they won't keep it indefinitely and you might not get your money back.

Peekingduck · 29/11/2013 23:09

Think about it - you click... the money is taken from your account and the product is made available for you to collect. In other words, you have made a purchase. What's difficult to understand? You aren't entitled to a refund just because you changed your mind about the purchase for some reason.

If you are in any doubt about whether or not you purchased the goods, well it's obvious isn't it? If you hadn't made a purchase there would be no money gone and no refund to argue about.
I reckon you've been getting refunds on the grounds that you are a PITA, you're being completely unreasonable.

KerwhizzedMyself · 29/11/2013 23:11

YABU to warn us about something that no person with a brain would need to be warned about.

Peekingduck · 29/11/2013 23:11

Sorry, I really should preview... I meant you aren't entitled to a refund just because you changed your mind for a reason and just left it at the collection point.

needastrongone · 29/11/2013 23:11

Is this serious? Can't be bothered to collect?....

ErrolTheDragon · 29/11/2013 23:13

Obviously, the ideal solution is only use the service if you will 100% pick it up

Er, yes. Obviously.

HaroldTheGoat · 29/11/2013 23:14

Really? This seems a most unorthodox way to shop. I didn't colect something once in the timeframe and yes it was phone calls to sort out. Christmas nuts this is.

Littlecurrentbun · 29/11/2013 23:15

I would never buy and then not collect ????????????

DoubleLifeIsALifeOfSorts · 29/11/2013 23:15

But the Wastage is awful, I don't understand why you think this is the way the service works?
